According to the Chapin Police Department, officers responded to a distress call around 9 p.m. from the Firebridge subdivision, where the child was last seen playing in the backyard of their home. Upon their arrival, officers commenced searching both inside and outside the property. An extensive perimeter was quickly established with the support of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Lexington County Fire Service, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and even the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Authorities employed various search methods, including deploying K-9 units, applying high-tech resources like drones, and aerial surveillance using a helicopter.
The neighboring yards in the vicinity of the child’s residence were covered extensively, ensuring a sizable law enforcement presence in the entire neighborhood. With the safety of the child paramount, all residents were cooperative during the troubling clash with the unknown.
Just over an hour into the crisis, officers found the child, completely unharmed; the toddler was discovered sleeping peacefully under outdoor patio cushions on the home’s back porch, oblivious to the dire situation.
“We are grateful for this positive outcome and thankful the child was found quickly and safely. It was a concerning situation for law enforcement and, more importantly, for the parents. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Chapin community and the Firebridge subdivision residents for their cooperation during the search“, said Chapin Police Chief Thomas Griffin.
This harrowing experience emphasized the importance of community vigilance and responsiveness in crises, showcasing the efficacy of joint community and law enforcement efforts.
Parents and guardians are urged to always keep an eye on their children when outside and ensure that they do not wander away unnoticed. Despite today’s advanced technology, nothing replaces human care and attention in ensuring child safety.
