Spartanburg Man Confesses to Double Homicide
Kenyatta Lebby confronts 35-year sentence for 2020 murders
A Spartanburg resident, Kenyatta Lebby, pleaded guilty on Monday to murder charges linked to the deaths of Kelli Curran and Timothy Thompson, who tried to lend assistance when they believed his vehicle had broken down.
In the early hours of Oct. 25, 2020, Curran and Thompson were shot in their residence on Walden Circle. The investigators disclosed suspects, including Kenyatta Lebby, aged 24, had knocked on their door, seeking help and citing their vehicle had broken down.
Curran and Thompson had invited them inside and were subsequently shot. Despite her critical state, Curran managed to call 911 and relay a description of the culprits before she succumbed to her injuries. Thompson, on the other hand, died around two months later from the sustained injuries.
Key Evidence in Investigations
911 call operators heard one of the suspects referencing the other as “Dubb”; an alias they soon discovered to be associated with Lebby. Assistant Solicitor Spenser Smith expressed his sympathies towards the victims and lauded Ms. Curran’s courage and quick reactions to ring 911 which paved the way for these compelling investigations.
A significant motive behind this horrifying incident was allegedly Lebby’s intent to steal firearms from this home. He was accompanied by Tyleek Johnson and Deandre Fuller during this robbery. A subsequent video showing Lebby dancing with one of Thompson’s rifles was sourced. The weapon was later recovered from Johnson’s car in Greenville.
Conviction and Sentence
Lebby was charged guilty for two counts of murder, armed robbery, burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. His sentencing dictates a 35-year term in prison. Notably, his prior convictions include robbery, burglary, and the failure to stop for blue lights.
Johnson and Fuller, accomplices in this crime, are yet to stand trial. Johnson is additionally being charged for the 2015 murder of a 16-year-old, Cobey Smith in Greenville.
