This year, the holiday will fall on Monday, May 27, 2024. The towns of Anderson, Spartanburg and Greenville in Upstate South Carolina have several events lined up to commemorate this day. These encompass various activities ranging from charity races, concerts, cookouts, to remembrances for the country’s fallen heroes.
Lake Hartwell Activities
Memorial Day weekend is expected to attract many visitors to Lake Hartwell, one of the southeast’s largest and most popular recreation lakes. The authorities have urged boat users to adequately prepare for boating activities following an uptick in water accidents. Life jacket lending stations will be available at most campgrounds around the lake.
Ceremony at M.J. ‘Dolly’ Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson
Commemorations will also take place at the M.J. ‘Dolly’ Cooper Veterans Cemetery located at 140 Inway Drive in Anderson where individuals can pay their respects by placing flags at the grave markers of fallen soldiers.
Clemson Memorial Day Weekend Service
The Clemson Corps will be hosting a Memorial Day weekend service at Clemson University’s Scroll of Honor Memorial. Lt. Col. Tom von Kaenel, a retired United States Army officer, will be the featured speaker at this event scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 26.
Greenville Memorial Day Events
11th Annual Take Flight 5k and 1-mile Race
The 11th Annual Take Flight 5k and one-mile race will take place on Saturday, May 25. The race will feature a missing comrade ceremony and a performance of TAPS by musician Stephen Goshorn, with several military organizations in attendance.
Awen Family Band: Memorial Day Live Music Concert
The Awen Family Band Memorial Day and Live Music concert will take place on Monday, May 27. The band’s members, who’ve played with various artists, specialize in a range of music genres, not limited to Zydeco, Bluegrass, Afrobeat, and Psychedelic Boogie music.
3rd Annual Palmetto Heroes Hike in Greenville
The third annual Palmetto Heroes Hike will take place on Saturday, May 25. The event features a 6 or 12-mile hike on the Swamp Rabbit Trail and includes memorial checkpoints honoring the country’s fallen military and first responders. All proceeds will go to non-profit organizations like the Wounded and Recovering Fund and Upstate Warrior Solution.
Spartanburg Memorial Day Ceremony
A public ceremony will be held on Monday, May 27, at Duncan Park Amphitheater in Spartanburg, to honor fallen military heroes.
Town of Duncan Pre-Memorial Day Event
The Town of Duncan will be hosting a pre-Memorial Day event on Friday, May 24, featuring local food trucks and vendors. The event is free and open to the public.
First Annual Memorial Day Mile Returns
The first annual Memorial Day Mile returns on May 27, aligning with a national movement to, “Bring Back the Mile.” Awards will be given to the overall top three for females and males and the top three for female and male age groups.
