Trial Commences for Four Men Accused in 2019 Spartanburg Teen’s Killing

Monday Trial to Unfold

Four men accused of killing a Spartanburg teen, Kerolos Mina Zaky, 15, are set to face trial together on Monday, June 17. On the evening of Dec. 19, 2019, deputies from the Greenville County found Zaky dead inside a 2015 model Chrysler 200. Zaky had suffered at least one gunshot wound. The deputies had been responding to a shooting incident on Mansion Circle in Piedmont.

The accused, 23-year-old Jamazzeo Dequan Glover, 23-year-old Braelon Jaspar Brown, 20-year-old Jaylin Hill, and 20-year-old David Christopher Bernard Mosley, will face trial jointly in connection with the teen’s death. The four men face charges of murder, conspiracy, armed robbery, and attempted armed robbery as laid out by the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Additionally, Hill, Mosley, and Brown face an extra charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

A Series of Arrests

Following the shooting incident, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) arrested Glover on Dec. 20, 2019. A week later, Brown was taken into custody, and the final round of arrests related to the shooting occurred when Hill, Mosley, and another individual named Tyreke McMahand were apprehended.

At the time of their arrest, all four men were teenagers. McMahand, Hill, and Mosley – all minors under 18 years at the time of the incident – where initially placed in the Department of Juvenile Justice. Upon turning 18 years of age, they were moved to an adult prison. McMahand later took a plea deal as a juvenile in family court and thus is not included in the upcoming trial. He was subsequently released but later arrested on unrelated non-violent charges.

Legal Representation for the Accused

Doug Richardson and Britni McCall from the 13th Circuit Solicitor will represent the prosecution during the trial. The judge and the courtroom will be determined on Monday morning during the roster meeting. Each defendant has been provided legal representation. Glover has Asher Watson of the Watson and Fowler Law Firm, Mosley is represented by Kraig Pringle of the Pringle Law Firm, Hill’s attorney is Richard Warder of the Warder Law Firm, and Brown has chosen David Cantrell of the David Cantrell Law Office as his representative.

Family of Victim Files Lawsuit

The bereaved family of Zaky has filed a lawsuit against the four accused men’s guardians and a monitoring device company. The lawsuit alleges gross negligence on part of the guardians in supervising the teens. An investigation by the GCSO, as mentioned in the court documents of the lawsuit, purportedly showed that Zaky had driven the accused from a gas station to the Kingswood neighborhood in Piedmont. Once they arrived, it is believed that Zaky was physically attacked by one or more of his passengers in an attempted robbery. During the robbery attempt, Zaky was fatally shot in his torso.
