Mountain View Prep Files Lawsuit against Spartanburg Co. School Districts
Unpleasant Surprise Before the School Year
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – Mountain View Preparatory, a public charter school set to begin its school year next week, has fallen into a controversial situation. The school has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the Spartanburg School Districts 1 through 4, and the Foothills Athletic Conference. This action follows the decision made by the latter organizations, asserting that the 7th and 8th-graders of Mountain View Prep are barred from participating in athletic competitions.
A Plea for Fair Competition
According to Mountain View Prep Principal, Matt Talley, his school is no different from other charter and private schools already partaking in the conference. He believes the students, as members of a public charter school, are legally entitled to the same protections that other public school students have. To Talley’s disappointment, the decision to exclude Mountain View Prep from the conference was unanimous, and an effort to appeal was unacknowledged.
Impact on Students and School Reputation
The lawsuit filed by Mountain View Prep exposes the dissatisfaction among families caught in a tough decision-making process. The denial by the athletic conference forces families to choose between excellent academics with limited sports opportunities or a school with excellent athletics but questionable academic standards. “We are definitely seen as a threat,” said Principal Talley, expressing how the public’s perception affects the school’s reputation.
The athletic director and head football coach at Mountain View Preparatory, Grey Ramsey, shared his concerns about how this issue adversely affects the students. Regrettably, a number of students have chosen to leave the school following the situation, thus leading to a projected loss of over $600,000 in a span of the next six years for the school.

Mountain View Prep insists its focus lies on career and technical education, highlighting sports and sports entertainment-based career paths. This includes students gaining first-hand experience and knowledge by actively participating in sports. While high school students will have the opportunity to compete in 3A sports and the South Carolina High School League, Ramsey fears that middle school students will continue to face hardships unless this issue is resolved.
