Caroline Cleveland Announces Book Tour Stop in Spartanburg

Author and Labor Lawyer Caroline Cleveland to promote her debut novel “When Cicadas Cry” at Hub City Bookshop

Renowned labor and employment lawyer and first-time author, Caroline Cleveland, will be making a stop at Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg for the tour of her debut novel, “When Cicadas Cry.”

The scheduled visit stems from a need to promote her new and unique narrative, based on a concept she hatched almost a decade ago. The storied tale revolves around a South Carolina attorney, Zach Strander, and his love interest Addie Stone, a detective. The story runs on two parallel murder plots; one set in 2017, while the other dates back to 1983.

The Narrative That Took a Decade to Craft

Commenting on her foray into fiction writing, Cleveland explained how the idea surfaced a decade ago. She envisioned a young lawyer absorbed in a case so profound that it mirrored something way beyond his years. The gender of the lawyer initially remained uncertain, leading to the creation of two protagonists. As the narrative progressed, the bond between Strander and Stone evolved, encouraging a romance to flourish.

The storytelling maintains its intrigue courtesy of a first-person narration by Strander and Stone and intermittent snippets from the killer’s perspective. This creative approach ensures readers remain engaged and riveted by the cold case and its subtle connections with the present-day scenario.

Connecting Historical Murders to Contemporary Tales

Discussing her engaging narrative style, Cleveland said, “As I was trying to write this book, I was thinking about ways to make that old murder feel new and fresh to readers.” To inject a sense of novelty into the narrative, she allowed the murderer to interact directly with her audience. This unique plot device added a level of suspense and mystery that captivated readers, compelling them to delve into a tale that was as old as their protagonists, yet felt refreshingly modern.

Celebrating the Book Launch in Spartanburg

To honor the release of her debut novel, Caroline Cleveland is scheduled to engage in a reading session of “When Cicadas Cry” and sign copies of the book on the 12th of September from 6-7 p.m. at Hub City Bookshop.
