Among the excited locals is Torry Allen Sr., the proud owner of South Style Cutz Barbershop, an establishment that’s been serving Spartanburg for a quarter-century. Allen, who has been cutting hair on West Main Street for decades, expressed his feelings about the upcoming changes. “I am professional barber, master barber, I have been here for 25 years serving the area”, said an excited Allen.

He mentioned the decline of several businesses on the street over the years due to lack of development. However, with a surge of new developments projected on the horizon, he believes brighter days are ahead. Allen sees potential for rejuvenation with the forthcoming baseball field that he expects will breathe new life into the area and significantly uplift the downtown vibe.

The West Main Street Facelift: A Positive Outlook

Amidst all this anticipation, the Spartanburg City Council provided the green signal for a $2.5 million dollar project bid to breathe fresh life into more of West Main Street. The improvements are expected to take place just a few footsteps away from Allen’s barbershop.

Christopher George, the City of Spartanburg spokesperson, revealed their aspirations for the project. Their motive revolves around enhancing the appeal of the gateway to downtown located on West Main Street, starting from Saint John’s intersection up to the railroad tracks. The city officials also intend to create a more inviting space which will not only beautify the area but also ramp up livability.

Creating a Multi-Use Trail

Their ambitious plan includes carving out a specific area for a multi-use trail. Now, isn’t that an exciting concept folks? This trail will provide a dedicated space for folks keen on running, walking, or any other form of transportation, even including a protected bike lane.

The city officials hope to commence construction late this month or early October. They’ve given a timeline of about 180 days for the completion, providing the weather plays along.
