Spartanburg Celebrates Wofford Women's Basketball Season Opener with Dominant 76-27 Win Over Newberry

Spartanburg Rings in with Victory for Wofford Women’s Basketball

Hey, Spartanburg folks, have you heard about Wofford’s women’s basketball team’s electrifying performance on Monday night? The Terriers revved up their season in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium with a resounding 76-27 victory over the Newberry Wolves after an enthralling game!

First Quarter Thrills

The first quarter ended with the nail-biting score of 11-10 in the Wolves’ favor. But, the Terriers bit back in the second quarter, not allowing their opponents to score a single point. Wofford outshone Newberry with a shooting clip of 40.3 percent, compared to the Wolves’ 20.0 percent. Wofford’s precision from the free-throw line was just superb, hitting 15 of 18 attempts.

Dominating the Boards

Our Terriers flexed their muscle by outrebounding the Wolves 53-34, marking the Wofford program’s first 50-plus rebounding effort since a 52-rebound performance back in December 2023. Add to that an impressive tally of 19 assists, and the Terriers certainly made their mark on the game.

A Sterling Defensive Show

The terminator Terrier defense forced an uptake of 28 Wolves’ turnovers and snatched 17 steals, the first 15-plus swipe performance since March 2023. Converting these turnovers into 41 extra points and 16 fast break scores highlighted their measured aggression.

The Roster Shines

All 12 Terriers got a chance to stretch their game legs, and 11 of them were off the mark, with Maddie Heiss spearheading the attack with an impressive 11-point contribution. Off the bench, Wofford’s reserves accounted for over half of the team’s points, contributing a significant 42 of the total 76 points.

Competitive Debuts on Show

Freshman Molly Masingale made her college basketball debut by contributing an eye-catching seven points, while senior player Libby Privett finally made her much-anticipated comeback with a stellar 10-point haul. The moment was purely emotional for Privett, who recognized the overwhelm of the support from her team that has stood by her during her injury-filled years.

Game’s Overview

Evangelia Paulk kickstarted the season by nailing the first points. The Terriers, after initial struggles, found their rhythm in the second quarter and led with a comfortable 28-11 at the half. The second half saw the Terriers upping the ante, and the Wolves struggling to catch up.

Maddie Heiss and Helen Matthews played critical roles, sparking a 12-point Terrier charge that further enlarged the gap. Privett’s excellent three-pointer in the final quarter capped off an exceptional 15-straight point run for Wofford, pushing their lead to 62-23 with just over five minutes to play. Wofford’s commanding performance left little room, sealing a sweeping 76-27 victory to start the season.

Looking Ahead

The victorious Wofford Terriers now set their sights on their upcoming game against NC Central on Saturday, November 9. We wish them luck as they head off for a three-game road stint!
