On Thursday, Spartanburg area high school students received news that brightened their day and would potentially change their lives.
The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund
They learned about the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund, a private scholarship program, expanding to Spartanburg County. This amazing program offers qualifying students a golden opportunity—an opportunity to pursue a free college education. For high school seniors such as Mariela Osorio from James F. Byrnes High School, this came as a celebration and relief. The anticipations of securing adequate funds to cover her college tuition had been gradually escalating throughout the year, causing stress. With her acceptance letter from Anderson University in hand and dreams of becoming an elementary school teacher awaiting fruition, the question of how to fund her education had been looming large.
Fortunately, a whopping $40 million donation to the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund meant students such as Osorio, particularly high-achieving ones from lower-income households in Spartanburg County, no longer need to worry about their college fees.
Breaking the Barriers
According to Josh Bell, the fund’s executive director, a good education should not be constrained by socio-economic factors or geographical location. The donator of the hefty sum is Sherman Financial founder Ben Navarro, based in Charleston. These lofty donations will cover Spartanburg students’ tuition, housing, food, and other expenses as long as they choose the right college.
And that’s not all. The fund also indicates that these students can graduate from college, potentially being the first ones in their families to do so, without any debt.
More About the Financial Support
The fund plans to provide a hefty sum, upto $40,000 over four years, for each student. This generous endeavor aims to cover the educational costs of approximately 200 Spartanburg County students annually over the next five years.

No doubt, this warmth of financial support on a chilly morning is comforting to students like Brianna Lowery, another senior from Byrnes High School hoping to become a pediatric nurse. She believes her grandparents, who had been saving for her education, would receive this news as a divine blessing.
The Journey So Far
The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund began its journey in 2020 in Charleston County, already having made a substantial impact with $36.4 million in scholarships for 954 students thus far. With these encouraging statistics and a noble vision, the expansion of the fund to cover all of South Carolina’s 46 counties seems a hopeful eventuality.

The students must live in the designated counties, graduate from a public school, meet certain academic standards and come from lower-income households.
