Spartanburg โ€“ Marquice Clark, principal of Cleveland Academy of Leadership, has been recognized as the 2025 South Carolina Elementary School Principal of the Year. The announcement was made during a ceremony held on November 25, 2024, at the Spartanburg School District 7 Board of Trustees’ meeting room, surprising Clark along with many attendees including family and friends.

Clark, who has been leading Cleveland Academy since 2018 after serving as an assistant principal, was visibly emotional upon receiving the award. He was one of 35 candidates considered for the prestigious award.

Since joining Cleveland Academy in 2011 as a second-grade teacher, Clark has significantly impacted the school. Under his leadership, the school, which serves over 500 students, has seen marked academic improvements and a reduction in discipline referrals. The school was established in 1999, and Clarkโ€™s dedication has been pivotal in transforming the educational environment.

The award was presented by Quincie Moore, executive director of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, who highlighted Clark’s accomplishments. He was accompanied by his wife, Brenda, and their children, Charlotte and Marquice. Clark expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that his success is a collective achievement: โ€œNone of this was done by one person… Nothing great ever comes from one person’s efforts,โ€ he stated.

After the ceremony, Jeff Stevens, the superintendent of District 7, praised Clarkโ€™s leadership qualities. โ€œTo have someone of his caliber leading our schools… it’s a game changer for our district,โ€ Stevens remarked. Several family members of Clark traveled from Sumter County to join in the celebration, underscoring the community’s support for the school principal.

Clark’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Morris College and a Master’s degree in administration and supervision from Furman University. His approach to leadership is rooted in bravery and commitment to improving students’ lives. โ€œDr. Clark has truly revolutionized the Cleveland Academy of Leadership,โ€ Moore noted, pointing out how his transformative leadership style has yielded significant results for the students.
