Welcome to the Future: Spartanburg Unveils Plans for Morgan Square Pavilion

Big news from the small and yet vibrant, Spartanburg! The city is gearing up for some major changes as we bring you the news about the latest plans for the downtown area. The Spartanburg Design Review Board recently approved designs for structures planned for the Morgan Square Pavilion. But what awaits us at the heart of Spartanburg, you ask? Well, let’s delve into the details!

A Fresh Take on Iconic Morgan Square

The Morgan Square Pavilion is envisioned to be the crown jewel at the front door of the downtown square that is neatly tucked between North Church Street and Main Street. It will be a symbol of Spartanburg’s growth and the burgeoning energy of the downtown area. The pavilion will be constructed of three individual freestanding buildings plus a unique freeform canopy above. Sounds exciting, right?

But that’s not all! The proposed structure will house a little something for everyone. The pavilion will include a Visitor Information Kiosk staffed by a city-employed guide, an essential Public Toilet Facility equipped with two fixtures for both men and women, and a City Storage Building. Truly, no stone is left unturned in the preparations to welcome visitors and locals alike.

Revamping the Heart of Spartanburg

According to a city spokesperson, the revamp of Morgan Square is crucial to preparing for the influx of new visitors and ensuring that the city’s central hub continues to serve its residents effectively. Changes from last year’s plans include a downsizing in the square’s layout, a reduction in sprawling green spaces, the elimination of water features, and the addition of about 30 trees and a charming small public garden. Fear not, folks! The essential visitor kiosk, restrooms, cozy dining space, and those all-favorite Dunbar St. swings are still included in the design.

A Glimpse into Phase 2

Phase 2 will focus on revamping the space between the iconic Daniel Morgan’s statue and Daniel Morgan Ave. Proposed improvements here include removing the median, the relocation of the clock, and making sure the traffic route is as smooth as Sunday morning. This second phase will truly enhance the whole downtown experience!

What’s Next?

So, what happens now? The approved designs of this ambitious project will proceed to the Spartanburg City Council for budget approval. The council is yet to set a date for the meeting, but it’s penciled in for Dec. 16. Fingers crossed, folks!

If all goes well, the construction of the new square is set to kick off in early 2025, taking around 10 to 11 months. We can’t wait to see how these plans reshape the look and feel of Spartanburg’s downtown area. In the meantime, stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
