With interactive audience experiences and a focus on local talent, this unique show promises to delight attendees of all ages. Performances are set for this weekend at the Chapman Cultural Center.
This weekend, the lovely city of Spartanburg will be buzzing with excitement as Ballet Spartanburg presents a production that is sure to delight both ballet fans and baseball enthusiasts alike. The show, called “The Mighty Casey,” will feature exciting performances from two talented former students of Ballet Spartanburg, Michael Agudelo and Will Robichaud, who have returned as guest artists. Now professional dancers with Ballet San Antonio, both Agudelo and Robichaud are ready to show Spartanburg what they’ve got!
The much-anticipated ballet is inspired by the beloved poems, “Casey at the Bat” and “Casey — Twenty Years Later.” The production will be staged at the charming Chapman Cultural Center and is especially dedicated to the opening of Spartanburg’s new baseball stadium, Fifth Third Park, which will make its grand entrance on April 1. The local baseball team, The Spartanburgers, is among the show’s enthusiastic sponsors, adding to the community spirit surrounding this event.
The professional dance company at Ballet Spartanburg primarily boasts an all-female cast, which led to the recruitment of Agudelo and Robichaud to fill essential male roles in the production. The excitement of seeing familiar faces on stage is palpable, especially when the two dancers are well-known in the area for their impressive skills and dedication to the art of ballet.
Agudelo, who has been a principal dancer with Ballet San Antonio for a decade, will be taking on the role of a beloved baseball player on Casey’s team. Meanwhile, Robichaud, now in his third year with Ballet San Antonio, will be stepping into the shoes of a third baseman. Interestingly, both of them learned the choreography for the entire ballet in a mere two days upon their return, showcasing their expertise and training!
The cast promises to be lively, with a rich ensemble composition that features two baseball teams, a couple in love, and even a sweet canine character that adds an adorable touch to the performance. The excitement around their rehearsals has been palpable, especially for Maia Blake, who, as the pitcher of the Bugville team, is performing traditionally male-dominated dance steps while bringing her unique flair to the role.
Will Scott, a dedicated company artist in his tenth season with Ballet Spartanburg, has the honor of playing the lead role of Casey. Known for his strong background in baseball, he found it easier to embody the character. The production strikes an exciting balance between traditional ballet and the spirit of American baseball culture, incorporating the singing of the National Anthem and classic baseball songs into the performance.
The choreography is innovative, combining classic ballet moves with captivating rhythms inspired by Irish step dance, creating a unique dance experience. The costumes, which reflect the iconic style of the 1888 poem, are rented from the acclaimed Pittsburgh Ballet, ensuring authentic representation.
Bringing an interactive element to the performance, the Spartanburgers will be selling merchandise and tickets in the lobby during the show. And for those looking for a bit of fun, Ballet Spartanburg will offer baseball-themed souvenirs, popcorn, and classic Cracker Jacks. Plus, any audience member sporting a baseball jersey will snag a free bag of popcorn! It’s the perfect treat while enjoying a night of entertainment.
Mark your calendars! Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday afternoon shows at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are very affordable at $22 for ages 22 and under, $27 for seniors, and just $30 for adults!
The excitement of “The Mighty Casey” is taking Spartanburg by storm, and it promises to be an unforgettable experience for families and friends alike. Come and support local talent, enjoy an exciting show, and celebrate our community’s love for both ballet and baseball!
