Basil’s B52 Restaurant in Spartanburg to Cease Operations After 41 Years Due to Rising Costs; Plans for Food Truck Venture Underway

Local Staple Basil’s B52 Restaurant to Shut Down After 41 Years

End of an Era for Spartanburg Establishment Due to High Rent

Spartanburg, SC – A local dining gem, Basil’s B52, regretfully announced its closure after more than 41 years of serving the Spartanburg community. The enduring dining establishment’s shuttering is mainly due to the exorbitant rent and operational costs. Its doors will officially close on March 2.

Rising Operational Costs Prove Unsustainable

Owner Lana Pearson broke the news with a heavy heart, stating that increasing rent prices were primarily to blame. “Rent has just gone sky high,” Pearson opined. “The insurance has gone up, the supplies are ridiculous, and I don’t want to have to raise my prices so people can enjoy a good steak. It’s just not me, and I don’t want to rip anyone off and raise my prices. We are packed and booming, but the prices are so expensive.”

Possible New Beginnings through a Food Truck

However, fans of Basil’s B52 might not have to wait long for their favorite dishes. Pearson has plans to keep serving the community through a food truck. She says this idea was an afterthought, yet it could be a way to continue the restaurant’s legacy. “The menu will be similar, and a few of the items will also be on the menu,” shared Pearson.

“The food truck was an afterthought about two weeks ago. My cousin’s wife owns a food truck in North Carolina, and they asked me if I was interested in buying it.”

A Family Endeavor That Touched Many Hearts

Operating since 1995, Basil’s B52 has been in Pearson’s family, creating long-lasting memories for staff and patrons alike. The imminent closure has inspired an outpouring of support and nostalgia from the community, indicating the profound impact the restaurant has had. “I worked here as a kid, and my aunt bought it in 1995,” Pearson remarked. “My cousin inherited it, and I bought it from him in 2015, but I’ve been here for 21 years. When I read the comments on Facebook, I would have never dreamed people loved us this much – I felt the love.”

Gratitude Towards the Community

Pearson expressed deep gratitude to patrons pledging to give a hearty “thank you” on their last day. “I want to thank everybody for sure, especially after reading all of the comments,” she stated. “I knew people liked us, but I didn’t know they truly loved us.”

Conclusion

While it is undoubtedly sad to bid farewell to such a community cornerstone, Basil’s B52’s legacy promises to live on with plans for a food truck. In times of change and uncertain futures, it is comforting to witness the enduring power of community and shared culinary experiences. We look forward to tasting the delectable food offerings from Pearson’s forthcoming venture and wish her all the best for this new food journey.
