The raw experience of war in Ukraine echoes through the last three years – a taxing ordeal that has worn on the country’s soul. But amidst the upheaval, a remarkable tale of courage, friendship, and resilience has emerged that has forged an incredible link between the frontlines in Ukraine and the quiet corner of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
At the heart of this story is a brave Ukrainian soldier, the steadfast Oleksandr ‘Sasha’ Bazylevych, who has battled not only the destructive force of war, but also the personal struggle of recovery after a life-altering ambush attack. His tale of perseverance ignited an unlikely friendship with Spartanburg’s own Karen Floyd, the founder of a local organization, who was in Ukraine documenting the hard-hitting realities of war.
Sasha’s story starts at the frontline, where he served as a volunteer soldier. During a particularly ferocious ambush, Sasha was severely injured. Incredibly, this near-tragic event was caught on camera by Karen’s crew, who were in Ukraine creating a documentary on the war.
“When we learned they had been ambushed and there were life-altering injuries, I said I wanted to interview one of them,” Karen explained. Little did she know that this decision would not only immortalize Sasha’s bravery on film, but create an extraordinary connection.
Months later in South Carolina, Karen’s path crossed with Nadia Tofan, a Ukrainian living in Greer, during a screening of her documentary. Exchanging stories, they decided to find Sasha, who Karen had last seen in a hospital bed, fighting for his life.
“I’ll do everything I can–not even knowing how I am going to find Sasha,” Nadia promised. In an amazing stroke of luck, it turned out that Sasha was not just alive, but had been in the United States for the last three months. “Like mathematically, it’s completely and totally improbable. It had to be God,” reflected Karen.
Reconnecting in the States, Karen knew Sasha’s fight wasn’t over. The soldier, now in Minnesota, was undergoing rehabilitation and working towards a goal – to walk again.
“I understand that it’s good days and bad days. I understand that I have goals and I have a future and that’s all— I just keep moving on,” Sasha asserted with determination, fueling hope not just for himself but for everyone who has heard his tale.
This summer, Sasha and Karen were once again united in Spartanburg. Their goal: to raise funds for the prosthetics Sasha needs to conquer his new battlefield – the path to recovery.
Sasha’s story has become an inspiration. His unwavering strength and the incredible bond with Karen brings a spark of hope even in troubled times.
“Things that [Sasha] wants for Ukraine, I want for him,” said Karen. “I want him to be able to live independently and to have freedom and to realize his dreams and his goals.” This sentiment captures not just the essence of their unique friendship, but also the underlying message of their tale; amidst the hardship, there’s always room for hope, connection, and the strength of the human spirit.
