In Spartanburg, a vibrant celebration of Black culture, history, and expression has taken the spotlight on the Chapman Cultural Center through the Woven 2024 Art Exhibition. This creative gathering presents a diverse canvas of Black experiences as portrayed by an array of artists from the Southeast. Among those featured is local artist, Yasmine Lee, who shares an incredible narrative through her extraordinary piece, “The Giant Living Room”.
Derived from an old slave narrative about enslaved people who could fly away from plantations, Lee’s artwork necessitated a span of four full days for completion. “In that narrative, it is always disheartening hearing about those who could fly and remembered those they left behind, but did not come back for them,” Lee explained.
Danielle Woodson, the exhibition’s organizer, believes that the emotive display will leave a durable impact on the community. Woodson expressed, “There’s lots of love and a lot of history. There are great pieces of a mother and daughter doing hair. There’s a celebration of music, a celebration of bodies, a celebration of life. A lot of vibrancy and love pervade the atmosphere.”
Art enthusiasts have the opportunity to view the Woven exhibition at the Chapman Cultural Center during the monthly Art Walk, taking place every third Thursday from 5-8 PM. Additionally, the Juneteenth Reception will take place on Saturday, June 15th, commencing at noon. Both the Art Walk and reception are open to the public and free. For those unable to attend these events, the Exhibition is also available for viewing Tuesday to Friday from 10 am – 5 pm.
This creative exhibition serves as a tributary confluence between the arts and an imperative historical moment, Juneteenth. The artists, through their vibrant pieces, honor the resilience and courage of the Black community. The Woven 2024 Art Exhibition is not only a spectacle of aesthetic beauty, but also a potent reminder of the remarkable history and indomitable spirit of Black culture. Through the power of art, the echoes of the past come alive, celebrating freedom and underscoring the importance of remembering our diverse heritage that continues to shape the present and the future.
