BMW Group Spartanburg Plant Launches State-of-the-Art Press Shop Ahead of New BMW X3 Release

Spartanburg, South Carolina – The celebrated BMW Group Spartanburg Plant, widely known for its high-quality production, has disclosed the commencement of its first press shop as it gears up for the unveiling of the new BMW X3 model. The Spartanburg facility stands as one of the BMW Group’s most significant plants globally and marked its 30th year of production this year.

Investment and Job Creation

The press shop inception signifies a whopping $200 million investment and spans over an impressive 20,000 square meters. This astounding venture was completed in under two years, successfully creating over 200 new jobs. It showcases cutting-edge high-tech servo technology, with features such as a 55-ton overhead crane and a coil line with a staggering production rate of up to 10,000 parts daily.

Advanced Technology and Quality Control

After the components are stamped, they are meticulously inspected under quality control using specialized lighting that emulates natural daylight. The highly scrutinized parts then are stacked into containers, awaiting delivery to the body shop for further processing.

Tangible Impact on Local Economy

Just in the last three decades, Plant Spartanburg has assembled over 6.7 million BMWs and currently employs more than 11,000 people. The 750,000-square-meter campus generates around 20 percent of its power from recycled methane gas from a local landfill and deploys hydrogen fuel cell technology to power approximately 800 logistic vehicles.

Future Plans for Electric Vehicles

BMW Group announced earlier this year that it will be investing $1.7 billion in its US operations. This includes $1 billion aimed at preparing the Spartanburg Plant to assemble fully-electric vehicles and $700 million to erect a high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina.

The Success of BMW X3 and the Anticipation of the New Model

The forthcoming BMW X3, the fourth-generation model, was showcased during the event. It is one of the company’s highest-selling vehicles in the United States and globally. The Spartanburg plant employees have assembled more than 1.7 million BMW X3s since the model was first launched in 2010. Mark your calendars as the new BMW X3 is scheduled to hit the market in autumn 2024.

All this data conveyed above represents the dedication and commitment of BMW Group to innovate and enhance their production to live up to their reputation in the automobile industry.
