Caroline Cleveland to Make Bookstore Stop in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, SC — Caroline Cleveland, a prominent labor and employment lawyer turned author, is all set to make a stop at Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg for promoting her debut novel, “When Cicadas Cry.”

A Tale Set in South Carolina

Born out of an idea that lingered in her mind for almost a decade, Cleveland’s novel revolves around a South Carolina lawyer, Zach Strander, and his detective lover, Addie Stone. The novel presents an enthralling fusion of two separate homicide cases, one rooted in the eventful year of 2017 and the other traveling back 34 years from then.

Interwoven Storylines

In 2017’s scene, Strander is found defending Sam Jenkins who is an accused murderer, alleged to have beaten a white woman to death with an altar cross in a secluded church situated along Cicada Road in Walterboro. Parallel to this plot, Stone unwraps the mystery of a double homicide cold case dated back to 1983 on Edisto Beach. The novel progresses to reveal the intricate connections between two cases, as the murderers infiltrates the personal space of Strander and Stone.

“This book started in my head maybe a decade ago,” says Cleveland. “They are partners in every way. They met working cases together and blossomed into a romance.”

Unique Narration Style

Adding a vibrant touch to the storytelling, Cleveland has used the first-person narration provided by Strander and Stone. Along with them, the killer also gets a chance to play his part in the narration, speaking in anonymous sidebars to unveil the details from the cold case.

“As I was trying to write this book, I was thinking about ways to make that old murder feel new and fresh to readers… I need to let the killer talk directly to the reader. I think it keeps the story moving in a way it couldn’t have done with having you go back in time (and) seeing who it was,” explains Cleveland.

Pop in for a Book Reading

Cleveland will be reading extracts from “When Cicadas Cry” and signing copies of the novel on Sept. 12 from 6-7 p.m. at the Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg. Those who wish to be a part of this engaging session can visit the Hub City Bookshop website for further details.

In this captivating narrative of mystery and romance, Cleveland’s keen attention to legal and investigative details demonstrate her expertise as a lawyer, making “When Cicadas Cry” a must-read recommendation from HERE News.
