Vehicle Parking Gets an Update in Spartanburg: Cashless Parking Garages, Here’s What You Need to Know

Vehicle Parking Gets an Update in Spartanburg: Cashless Parking Garages, Here’s What You Need to Know

In a bid to modernize and simplify its parking operations, Spartanburg has announced that all city-owned parking garages will go cashless, transitioning to parking kiosk systems starting June 1. These state-of-the-art parking kiosks will only accept debit and credit card payments, marking the departure from traditional cash transactions.

Downtown Parking Operations Are Going Cashless

The city has taken a decisive step toward improving its service and meeting the technological demands of the contemporary world. Introducing cashless parking kiosks are a part of this much-needed change, explains City Communications Manager Christopher George. He added that the development would not interfere with the daily operations of the garages as they will remain open during kiosk installation.

“The kiosks folks will be using in our parking garages are similar to those found in many of our peer communities, and they’ve become the standard used in most cities throughout the country,” said George.

Parking Charges and Services Remain Unchanged

The long-standing standard daytime fee of 50 cents per hour with a $4 daily max will still apply for those using the garages from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, while after-hours and weekend access continues to be free.

“The new system will be entirely cashless, and that will be clearly indicated with signage at the garage entrances,” George stressed. “However, users will not be left to navigate this new technology on their own. Each kiosk will come equipped with a call button that connects to 24/7 customer service to address any issues users may have with the system.”

Furthermore, those with handicap parking placards or tags can use the call button to confirm their tag and have the gates raised remotely. This comes as part of Spartanburg’s initiative to ensure all drivers, regardless of their abilities, enjoy free parking.

Application of Cashless System to City-Owned Garages Only

It should be noted that the new cashless parking kiosks will only be installed in city-owned parking garages, excluding the courthouse parking garage and the recently-approved baseball stadium garage, which are not under city jurisdiction.

As of now, Spartanburg is taking the lead in implementing this avant-garde approach towards parking garage operations. City officials anticipate that the new system will not only be more convenient for drivers, but it will also play a pivotal role in establishing Spartanburg as a city equipped to handle the demands of our ever-evolving digital world.

The people of Spartanburg are encouraged to keep an eye on these advancements and use this opportunity to adapt to a seamless, cashless parking experience. With this new system, Spartanburg hopes to serve as a benchmark for other cities looking to step into the future of cashless transactions.
