Down in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the local police department has taken it upon themselves to emphasize the importance of child safety to the community. Their new efforts stem from a safety awareness initiative that revolves around securing young passengers appropriately when they’re riding in a vehicle.
As it turns out, car crashes are consistently listed among the top causes of fatalities suffered by children. In fact, last year alone, a total of 42,514 traffic fatalities were reported across the United States. Shockingly, among these, 1,129 victims were children aged 14 and under, and here’s the real kicker: 39% of these children were not restrained properly at the time of the accident.
Seeing these alarming stats, we can clearly understand why the Spartanburg Police has felt prompted to encourage proper use of car seats and restraints. After all, kids need to be secured in a suitable manner for their age, size, and weight to ensure their safety.
“Parents must protect the welfare of their children by ensuring they are properly secured in the correct seat for their age, height and weight,” advises the police. In other words, just securely fastening your child in the car is not sufficient. You have to make sure that they are fastened in the correct type of seat, designed specifically for them considering their age, height, and weight.
Your little ones rely on you to make these choices for them, and by doing so, you could just be saving their life someday. Following the guidelines can greatly reduce the chances of grievous harm in the case of an unforeseen incident.
Recognizing how daunting this seemingly simple task might seem to many parents, assistance is being offered by the Safe Kids of the Piedmont. They are readily available to guide folks in grasping the correct way to fit car seats, by appointment only.
If you find yourself wondering about child passenger safety, our local Safe Kids Coalition Coordinator, Penny Shaw is there to help you. Guiding families in maintaining child passenger safety, she can answer your queries and provide necessary support. The only thing better than being safe is knowing you’ve done everything in your power to keep your little ones safe as well!
In more good news, the city is seeing some exciting developments. Things are moving forward regarding the redevelopment of city hall; community center upgrades are taking place and a new pedestrian bridge among other things, is in the works. These important updates reflect the continual progress and growth that Spartanburg is facing, steering it towards a brighter future.
Altogether, it’s important for us to appreciate the efforts taken to raise awareness regarding child safety. Think about it, our children are the future, and their safety is crucial. By practicing due caution and adhering to these important safety guidelines, we can look forward to journeys that are both enjoyable and safe for our young ones.
