Local authorities reported on Thursday that additional credit card skimmers were discovered at a gas station in Spartanburg County. This discovery was made at the Valero gas station located at 4195 South Pine Street, marking the second Valero location in the county to report skimmer detections this week.
According to a representative from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, the station manager reported the findings after a technician discovered two skimming devices during a routine upgrade. The authorities were informed that these devices resembled Bluetooth devices and were connected to the card readers in the gas pumps.
The gas station manager, however, was unable to provide a specific timeframe for when these devices might have been installed, and no records or security footage related to the incident were available.
Earlier this week, four similar skimming devices were unearthed at a Valero location on Chesnee Highway in Cowpens, marking this as a recurring issue within the area.
The sheriff’s office has since removed and secured the skimming devices from both Valero locations for further investigation. Despite these developments, no potential suspects have been named in the ongoing investigation as of the current time.
These episodes of skimming device discoveries have raised alarms regarding information and identity theft in Spartanburg County. Residents are urged to monitor their financial records closely and to report any suspicious activities to their respective financial institutions and local law enforcement immediately.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has reassured the public that it is working diligently to get to the bottom of these incidents and to prevent further instances of skimming in the area. Authorities are using all available resources to identify and apprehend any individuals responsible for these acts.
Further updates on this issue will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Credit card skimmers are devices illegally installed on card readers, such as ATMs or gas pumps, to steal the information stored on the cards. Typically, these devices are small and inconspicuous, making them difficult to detect by unsuspecting consumers.
However, authorities urge that simple precautionary measures, like checking card readers for loose parts before use or shielding your pin while entering it, can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to skimmers. Public awareness about the existence and operation of these devices is an essential aspect of deterring such fraudulent activities within the community.
