In the heart of Spartanburg, excitement bubbled over on March 7 as the Cleveland Academy of Leadership welcomed renowned chef Jet Tila for a memorable culinary experience. The visit was part of the Global Eats Showcase, a delightful initiative organized by Chartwells K12 aimed at igniting students’ passion for multicultural cuisine.
Chartwells K12, dedicated to providing nutritious meals in schools, has launched the Global Eats Program to introduce students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade to a smorgasbord of flavors from around the globe. Each month, the program highlights the culinary delights from different countries such as China, India, Italy, and Mexico, providing a rich tapestry of tastes and traditions.
Chef Tila, who boasts a Thai-Chinese heritage, captivated the young minds with his delightful cooking demonstration. His family’s journey, which began in China and led to Thailand before settling in the U.S. in 1956, infused his presentation with rich cultural significance. Tila’s passion for cooking was apparent as he prepared a delicious chicken meatball stir fry and flavorful fried rice right before the students’ eyes.
In the midst of sizzling sounds and enticing aromas, Tila shared the art of cooking. He illustrated the key differences between stir-frying and sautéing, explaining that stir-frying is traditionally done in a wok while sautéing takes place in a skillet. The students learned the significance of the wok in Chinese culture—an essential cooking tool in many Asian households.
Tila didn’t stop at just demonstrating techniques; he imparted valuable culinary wisdom as he emphasized the importance of aromatics like garlic and ginger, along with proteins, vegetables, and carbohydrates in creating a well-rounded dish. He also highlighted the five fundamental flavors in Chinese cuisine: spicy, sour, salty, sweet, and savory, offering insights that will surely leave a lasting impression on the students’ palates.
Joining Tila was Imani Colclough, Chartwells’ regional executive chef, who took the opportunity to discuss the importance of exposing children to diverse foods. This exposure, as noted by Colclough, helps cultivate an appreciation for different cultures which is not only beneficial for their culinary experiences but also promotes inclusivity and understanding.
Throughout the event, students had the chance to taste the delicious dishes Tila prepared, enhancing their culinary adventures with exciting flavors. But that wasn’t all! Each student received a special bag filled with chopsticks and a passport booklet, where they could collect stickers for each cultural food they sampled. This interactive element encouraged them to explore and celebrate the culinary diversity surrounding them.
The Global Eats Showcase, by bridging cultural education with food, has successfully turned the Cleveland Academy of Leadership into a hub of culinary discovery. Chef Jet Tila’s visit was not just a cooking demonstration but a heartwarming journey into the world of flavors, cultures, and the rich traditions that accompany them. Who knew cooking could be such a delightful way to learn about the world?
The entire experience was a beautiful reminder of how food has the power to bring people together, creating lasting memories and fostering understanding among different cultures. Cheers to tasty dishes and educational adventures in Spartanburg!
