In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the Spartanburg community reeling, three beloved students from Dorman High School tragically lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash. The accident unfolded on April 22, 2025, at around 4 p.m., at the intersection of Old Blackstock Road and Fairforest Clevedale Road.
The three young lives cut short belonged to Daniel Diaz (15), Aben Sisk (16), and Itzel Garcia-Trejo (17). Daniel and Aben died at the scene of the collision, while Itzel was rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The community is mourning the loss of these promising students, all of whom were known for their commendable academic achievements at Dorman High School.
According to reports, the tragedy unfolded when a 2021 Freightliner tractor-trailer attempted to make a left turn from Fairforest Clevedale Road onto Old Blackstock Road. In an unfortunate twist of fate, it collided with a 2004 Dodge pickup truck that was carrying Daniel, Aben, and Itzel, as well as another vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet coupe. The driver of the Chevrolet survived the incident but was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the crash.
The loss felt by Dorman High School is immense, especially since the school recently faced another tragedy with the death of a different student shortly before this accident. The principal of Dorman High expressed deep condolences, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of these students, who were not only high achievers but also great friends and peers to their classmates. The grief being experienced is palpable, and the school community is left to grapple with this unexpected loss.
To help students navigate their feelings of shock and sadness, counselors became available the very next day, on April 23. The school aims to provide a safe haven for students to process their grief and find solace in one another during this challenging time. It’s crucial for the community to lean on each other, supporting both classmates and families who are coping with such a profound tragedy.
As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash continues, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger confirmed the identities of the three students and highlighted the ongoing efforts to uncover more details about this tragic event. The authorities have pledged to thoroughly examine the situation to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Spartanburg County School District 6 has formally expressed its heartbreak regarding this incident, reaffirming their commitment to supporting the families of the deceased and the broader school community as they navigate this heartbreaking chapter.
