SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Half a century after its closure, Duncan Lake Park has once again opened its gates to the public. Residents armed with sunscreen and fishing gear thronged to the park on its grand reopening, eager to reclaim this cherished piece of their community.
The grand reopening of Duncan Lake Park was filled with joyous laughter and palpable excitement. Families flocked to the park, eager to enjoy the scenic spot that was inaccessible for half a century. Young Rylnn Wilkinson, just five years old, could barely contain her excitement as she proudly showed off the fish she had caught using a fake bait. “I just caught a big fish!” she exclaimed, her enthusiasm setting the tone for the day.
Local resident and fishing enthusiast, Justin Kelly, spoke about his joy on this occasion. “Oh, I’m so happy. I’ve been wanting to fish here for a long time, and I just didn’t want to get in trouble for doing so,” he said. Kelly spent the better part of his day showing others the tricks of the fishing rod, creating a community of fishermen amidst the lake’s familiar surroundings.
Kelly’s apprentice for the day, Sam Duggins, managed to make more hauling despite Kelly’s tips. “I’ve gotten a few nibbles but haven’t hooked one yet,” she said with an infectious smile. Her determined attitude inspired other fishing enthusiasts at the park, resulting in collective cheers when she finally caught a fish.
The City of Spartanburg representative, Christopher George, shed some light on the park’s history while addressing the crowd. “It was a really long time ago when the park was closed due to neighborhood concerns about people fishing and using the lake. Now those concerns aren’t relevant anymore,” he stated. He was also quick to point out that many locals had expressed a strong desire to see the park reopened, reflecting the shift in the community’s attitude.
The grand reopening of Duncan Lake Park signifies more than just the return of a local recreational spot; it marks the revival of community spirit and paves the way for new memories. As families enjoyed their day among the lush greenery and serene lake, it was evident that the reopening of Duncan Lake Park was much more than a park – it was the revival of a community hub where memories are bound to be made.
