After decades of closure, Duncan Park Lake in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has reopened for non-motorized boating and catch-and-release fishing, much to the delight of the local community. The city shut down these activities approximately 50 years ago due to neighborhood concerns that are no longer relevant, according to local authorities.
The new dock at the 14-acre lake is already causing a stir among locals. Sophi Schwartzbauer, communications manager for Play Advocate Live Well (PAL), warmly expressed the significance of the new infrastructure. “This is not just a dock – it’s a huge deal. We see the potential to bring the community out together for active recreation on the lake,” she said.
Schwartzbauer further noted that the local community was way more excited about the reopening than they used to be. “It’s one of the most significant requests we’ve had for a long time,” she added.
As the summer heat intensifies, the reopening of the lake provides a fabulous opportunity for residents and visitors to engage in water activities and seek relief. With its close proximity to downtown, only three minutes away, the lake is expected to attract a considerable number of people.
For visitors who do not own a kayak, a new Share Kayak app has been launched. Users can rent kayaks by simply scanning a QR code. Rentals are available in hour increments, making it convenient for park visitors to enjoy the lake without having to bring their own equipment. “You can rent it in hour increments and just bring it back whenever you like. The kayak is right beside the dock, so you don’t have to lug it a long way. In theory, you can kayak all day,” said Schwartzbauer.
While visitors are encouraged to enjoy the boating activities, they are also advised to follow safety regulations. Life jackets are provided at the park, but visitors are urged not to swim in the lake. Fishing is permissible from the boat or the lakeside, however entering the water is strongly prohibited.
The reopening of Duncan Park Lake signifies a new era for the local community and the Spartanburg city administration’s commitment to promoting recreational activities. As we head into the heat of the summer, it’s time to dust off your kayaks and bait your fishing rods – an unforgettable experience awaits.
