Duncan Park Lake reopens for non-motorized boating and fishing after decades

Spartanburg, S.C.

After being closed for approximately five decades, the 14-acre Duncan Park Lake is reopening for catch-and-release fishing and non-motorized boating. This is a notable turn of events as the lake had been closed to these activities due to neighborhood concerns no longer deemed relevant by the city.

New Dock Brings Big Change

“It may seem like just a dock, but it’s a big deal,” says Sophi Schwartzbauer, communications manager for Play Advocate Live Well (PAL). Schwartzbauer sees the potential for the dock to draw the community together through active recreation on the lake. The reopening signifies a key shift in public outlook compared to five decades ago, and has been one of the most requested changes for a long time, according to Spartanburg Communications Manager Christopher George.

Beating the Heat at Duncan Park

Located just three minutes from downtown, Duncan Park Lake is set to be a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts reigning in an influx of park visitors. Aside from the reopening’s help in beating the summer heat, the convenience of the Share Kayak app is also luring visitors. The app allows users to rent kayaks using a QR code, with hourly increments making it a great plan for those reluctant to lug their own gear to the lake.

Water Safety Caution

While wildlife enthusiasts are thrilled about non-motorized boating and fishing, there is a note of caution: swimming is strictly prohibited in the lake. Schwartzbauer added, “We ask that no one go swimming in the lake; you can fish from your boat and off the side of the lake, but we ask you to stay out of the water.” The park also provides life jackets to ensure boater safety.

Revitalizing Community Recreation

Duncan Park Lake reopening is more than just a landmark event; it marks a shift in community recreation, creating a natural retreat in the heart of the city. The local community is hopeful that this blend of nature and accessibility will lead to improved physical well-being and increase environmental consciousness among the citizens. As a consequence of this development, there is an escalated anticipation for other city projects that promise to reinvigorate the urban landscape.

Plan Your Visit

To join in on the excitement, plan your visit to Duncan Park Lake today. Whether you’re interested in boating, fishing, or simply soaking in the scenic views, this reopening is a welcome announcement for everyone. Remember to bring your excitement and leave behind your swimming gear for a memorable day at the newly renovated Duncan Park Lake.
