Winthrop softball is gearing up for a midweek showdown as they head to Wofford College for a matchup on Wednesday, March 13. The Eagles will be facing off against the Terriers at Hope Field in Spartanburg, South Carolina at 6 p.m.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between Winthrop and Wofford College, as the Terriers are in their inaugural year of competition.
Coming off a 1-3 weekend at Georgia Southern, the Eagles are looking to bounce back with a strong performance against Wofford. This midweek contest serves as a final tune-up before Winthrop dives into Big South Conference action this weekend at Presbyterian College.
Leading the charge for the Eagles is Emma Jackson, boasting a .357 average and a team-high in extra-base hits. Paige Rivas follows closely behind with a .288 batting average and leads the team and the Big South in stolen bases, going a perfect 17-for-17.
Ashton VanHouse has also been a force on the base paths, going 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts and ranking 6th in the conference. On the mound, Reese Basinger and Megan Powell anchor the pitching staff for Winthrop.
This matchup against Wofford will mark the 3,019th game in program history for the Eagles, who hold an all-time record of 1,229-1,088-3.
Despite finishing just outside the top four in the league standings last season, the Eagles closed out with a winning record of 26-24. Returning a wealth of experience, Winthrop is poised to make a strong push in the conference this year.
Key returners for the Eagles include Paige Rivas, KaDedra Temple, Reese Basinger, and Ashton VanHouse, who all played pivotal roles for Winthrop in 2022.
Leading the Eagles is head coach Kendall Fuller, who is in her second stint with the program. Fuller has displayed a strong coaching acumen, both on and off the field, guiding Winthrop to success and shaping the future of the program.
Several Eagles players are making their mark in the record books, with Reese Basinger ranking 9th all-time in program history for career strikeouts and Paige Rivas climbing the stolen base charts.
Reese Basinger has already earned recognition this season as the Big South Pitcher of the Week, showcasing her talent and leadership on the mound for Winthrop.
Following their matchup against Wofford, Winthrop will hit the road to kick off Big South Conference action against Presbyterian College on March 15-16. The Eagles will face off against the Blue Hose in a single game on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
