Welcome to Spartanburg, South Carolina, the city that has recently witnessed an impressive display of grit, determination, and absolute football magic by the ETSU women’s soccer team.
The 2024 season initially seemed grim for the ETSU squad who had managed only one conference win till Thursday and were struggling under the weight of being four games under .500. However, even the toughest fields sometimes bloom the most vibrant flowers. And bloom they did, in a grand style, cruising to a 3-0 win against Wofford.
The beginning of the game saw ETSU breaking free of the shackles that had bound them over the past few matches. After a dry spell of just one goal over the past three games, the girls picked up the pace in no time. With first-half goals from Reagan Fitzgerald and Jada Cooper, ETSU had indeed arrived. The party continued into the early seconds of the second half when Annabelle Ekern joined the goal scorers. First career goals for both Cooper and Ekern—now isn’t that a sight to behold?
You cannot talk about this match without mentioning the bravery and prowess of Ashton Blair. Our redshirt junior Goalkeeper made a monumental difference in the match and her career by accomplishing her 14th career clean sheet. This feat surpassed the previous record held by Jasmine Elliott of 13 clean sheets between 2013-16. It’s not just a win; it’s making history.
With another feather in their cap, the Bucs came out of the match with improved overall scores and renewed spirits. The scoreboard reads 3-6-2 overall and a decent 2-2-1 in conference play. An uphill trek, yes, but the journey looks promising.
The ETSU women’s soccer team will now gear up to return home for their next match. They’ll host Furman on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium. After this splendid victory, the audience waits with bated breath to watch what the team has in store for the next game. Sunday promises to be a date to remember!
