Clear blue skies with a high around 80F and light variable winds set the perfect backdrop as exciting news broke today in the town of Pacolet, located in Spartanburg County. The headlines read that Norfolk Southern, a primary stakeholder in the area, will be leasing property to this small town for a brand-new park.
With a history steeped in the textiles industry, the quaint town of Pacolet was originally known as Trough Shoals. However, the gradual decline of textiles led to the closing of the town’s primary mill in 1983, with its demolition eventually taking place in 1995. Despite this, several heritage buildings from the era still stand strong and serve as a testament to the town’s resilient spirit.
In a bid to breathe new life into this historic mill town, plans were shared about the upcoming 5.7-acre park slated to be in the heart of Pacolet, near the buzz of West Main Street and part of the ambitious comprehensive revitalization plan for the area. Work has already started, with volunteers being spotted clearing paths and removing trash from the chosen site.
The town’s leadership has also confirmed that a professional design firm has been hired to develop plans for the park, with presentations scheduled as early as December. The park could potentially feature a stage, perimeter path, quietly glowing lighting, an imposing grand lawn, and spaces designated for food trucks and picnicking. Talk about a recreational paradise!
With the hope of this park opening in 2025, it seems clear that the town is committed to transforming Pacolet into a vibrant hub of activity and growth. Interestingly, the vision for the town doesn’t end here. The comprehensive plan also showcases goals of developing zip lines, a new boardwalk, and a floating dock near the Pacolet River. However, town leaders revealed that the immediate focus would be on the establishment of the park.
Expected to be strategically located near several local businesses, like a mocha-scented coffeeshop and a popular grocery store, the introduction of this park is anticipated to provide a significant boost to the local economy. Emphasizing this, Pacolet’s mayor expressed his optimism, stating that this “exciting development” is expected to be a “good growing point for the town.”
Currently, the town is working on procuring the necessary grant funding up to $250,000 along with some additional funds for the project. Progress is certainly on the horizon from the looks of it!
For locals and visitors alike, the thought of a bright sunny day in the mid-80s, the wind gently rustling through the trees, and the hum of activity in a brand-new park sounds like a perfect day out in Pacolet.
