Here’s some news that’s sure to get your heart racing this Thanksgiving!
For many in the Upstate area, the day of gratitude begins not with the aroma of a roasting turkey filling the home, but with the exhilarating them donning a turkey costume and heading out to pound the pavement. Indeed, Thanksgiving Day marathons, or turkey trots, are a much-anticipated annual tradition dating back to the late 19th century- the first one reported by YMCA Buffalo Niagara in 1896. Upstate’s own history with this beloved tradition spans around two decades – offering a wholesome and hearty start to the holiday while also benefiting the local nonprofits.
If you’re in the Anderson region, check out the Electric City Gobbler 5K – an annual event since 2004 that kicks off the Turkey Day at 8:30 a.m. This race invites the whole community to get involved, whether that’s by participating in the run, volunteering, or simply showing up to show their support and cheer on the runners. The proceeds from the event go towards First Flight Alliance’s Operation Active Kids program that enables children to participate in dance and sports teams. Honor and reunite with your local community this Thanksgiving by becoming a part of this spirited event!
Meanwhile, in Spartanburg, the United Community Bank Turkey Day 8K is set to celebrate its 20th race this year. From a humble beginning with a small group of residents, the Turkey Day 8K has grown to over 2,000 enthusiastic participants from across the county. The 8K race, emphasizes the essence of community and the joy of participation over competition. The event is a hit with runners and walkers, individuals and teams, and one and all who want to immerse themselves in a fun, active morning celebrating Thanksgiving. Plus, you get a chance to snag a pair of custom Turkey Day socks!
Last, but definitely not the least, Greenville hosts two races organized by TreesUpstate, a local nonprofit that works to protect and plant trees. The Turkey Day 8K Run and 5K Fun Run and Walk, both start bright and early at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. These races offer participants a scenic route around downtown Greenville and also the opportunity to win cash prizes. Participation in either of these races contributes to TreesUpstate’s mission and benefits the local environment.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to enjoy in the holiday spirit, these turkey trots offer a wholesome, fun, and festive way to bring in Thanksgiving. So folks, why not start your Turkey Day with an invigorating dash and be a part of this joyous coming together of the community?
