Exciting improvements underway in Greenville, SC as bridge repairs and redevelopment at County Square begin.
Greenville is set for significant improvements as SCDOT announces bridge repairs and a $1 billion redevelopment project at County Square. Residents can provide input on upcoming bridge projects from March 10 to April 9. Key bridges under consideration include the S.C. Highway 288/Table Rock Road Bridge and the Dan River Road Bridge. The redevelopment at County Square aims to enhance pedestrian accommodations and traffic management over the next decade, reshaping the area for better accessibility and green spaces.
Greenville is buzzing with exciting news as the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is rolling out plans for some much-needed bridge repairs. Starting from March 10 until April 9, residents of Greenville, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties are invited to share their thoughts on various bridge improvement projects that aim to enhance our roadways and overall traffic flow.
The spotlight will shine on two specific bridges during the public meetings organized by SCDOT:
This is your chance to voice your opinions and concerns about these crucial projects! You can submit your comments effortlessly via the project website—every piece of feedback counts!
But that’s not all! There’s also a major redevelopment project underway at County Square in Greenville, covering over 37 acres—which is just about the size of downtown Greenville’s core! This ambitious project, expected to take around a decade to complete, comes with a hefty price tag of $1 billion. It’s a big undertaking, and it’s all for a good reason!
The County Square redevelopment is poised to transform the area dramatically, focusing heavily on pedestrian accommodation and finding smart ways to manage traffic to reduce congestion. The City of Greenville is really keen on how they can create green spaces and effective parking solutions within this massive transformation.
We’ve already seen other awe-inspiring projects in Greenville. Let’s not forget the Camperdown redevelopment that cost $200 million or the ONE mixed-use development, which set developers back by $100 million. Then there’s Verdae—with a whopping estimated cost of $1.5 billion and an area spanning 1,100 acres!
As part of its ongoing efforts, the SCDOT is gearing up to replace ten bridges in 2025, particularly those damaged by Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene. Looking close to home, five of these bridges will be in Greenville County. One significant project includes the S-115 Bridge over the Middle Tyger River, which will be reconstructed to meet current design standards.
Additionally, improvements are planned for the South Hudson Street Bridge and West Washington Street Bridge in Greenville County, which will necessitate new construction and some utility relocations to ensure the bridges meet modern standards.
Meanwhile in Spartanburg County, the S-52 Bridge over Motlow Creek is set for a replacement, which will require a 7.7-mile detour during construction. All these efforts ensure careful consideration of traffic and pedestrian flow, helping to make our roads safer and more efficient.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for April 2026 when construction on the Church Street Bridge in Greenville is scheduled to commence. The improvements are expected to unfold over the next 16 months, which could impact daily commutes for many. During this time, local law enforcement will keep a close eye on traffic patterns to guarantee smooth sailing throughout the construction phase.
Greenville’s future is looking bright with these projects on the horizon! Don’t miss your chance to engage with the SCDOT and share your input—it’s your city, after all!
