High School Girls in Upstate Show Impressive Display in Sports Skills
It is the time of the year again when sports activities took central stage for high school students in Upstate. For the week of Sept. 9-15, there were plenty of great performances from the girls in particular across the sports board.
Now, the community has a chance to vote for the Upstate high school girls athlete of the week. A list of the amazing talents we saw in action in the past week has been compiled, and they are all well deserving of your votes. They are now listed here in alphabetical order. So, grab your popcorn, make sure you’ve got a comfy seat because this is going to be an exciting ride!
Ashley Azzaro (Blue Ridge)
Ashley Azzaro did her school, Blue Ridge, proud by shooting a remarkable 40 to winize the medallist honors in competition against Travelers Rest. Her golfing skills were nothing short of impressive.
Reese Bryant (Travelers Rest)
Reese Bryant was really unstoppable during the past week. She won a home cross country meet by completing a 5,000-meter race at an amazing time of 21:20.40. It was indeed a thrilling moment for her and the entire Travelers Rest community.
Ruby Cain (Landrum) and Elona Darby (Palmetto)
Cain, from Landrum, and Darby, from Palmetto, also won at their separate cross country meets. Cain finished the race at Chapman with a time of 20:39.16, while Darby set a new personal record at the Easley Green Wave Invitational cross country meet with a time of 21:04.39.
Kate Gunnels (Belton-Honea Path)
In golf, it was Kate Gunnels of Belton-Honea Path who shone brightly. Her exceptional skills earned her the medalist spot in a tri-match against Walhalla and Seneca, by shooting an incredible 34!
Caroline King (J.L. Mann)
The Electric City Invitational cross country meet was a ground to shine for Caroline King from J.L. Mann. She raced against 80 other competitors, emerging as the champion with an epic time of 20:39.51.
Mallory Mizell (Woodmont), Sarah Lancaster (Chapman) and Ashby Williams (Daniel)
In volleyball, Mizell and Lancaster showed their grit. Mizell helped lead her team to two wins with 24 kills and 20 digs. Lancaster served to perfection with 17 kills, 10 digs, and three service aces in a victory against Greer Middle College, while the fleet-footed Williams won a home cross-country meet with a time of 19:41.05.
Barrett Owens (Easley)
Owens, a representative of Easley, became the medalist in a game that ended beautifully in a three-shot victory against Greenville, with her neat stroke count of 39.
