Upcoming High School Athletic Stars Shine in the Upstate

Just when we thought high school sports couldn’t get any more exciting, the girls across Upstate have shown us otherwise. Each week, we get a chance to vote for the top athlete who has shown outstanding performance, determination, and spirit. This past week, from Sept. 9-15, has no shortage of remarkable performances.

Before we dive into this week’s candidates, let’s give a round of applause once again for last week’s top performer, Reese Shugart from Dorman volleyball team. Reese showed us all how perseverance and hard work can lead to spectacular victories. This week, we have a new list of candidates vying for your votes!

This Week’s Candidates

The following candidates are listed in alphabetical order. Remember, you can vote for more than one athlete. The poll will close by noon on Thursday, so make sure to get your votes in before then!

Ashley Azzaro, of Blue Ridge: Shot an impressive 40 to win medalist honors as Blue Ridge golf bested Travelers Rest.
Reese Bryant, from Travelers Rest: Bryant ran a time of 21:20.40 in the 5,000 meters, winning a home cross country meet.
Ruby Cain, from Landrum: In a meet at Chapman, Cain bested her competition with a winning cross country time of 20:39.16.
Elona Darby, representing Palmetto: Darby took the title in the Easley Green Wave Invitational cross country meet with a time of 21:04.39.
Kate Gunnels, out of Belton-Honea Path: Gunnels shot a 34 to seize medalist honors in a golf tri-match against Walhalla and Seneca.
Caroline King, from J.L. Mann: King showed her cross country prowess at the Electric City Invitational by winning the meet with a time of 20:39.51 in a field of 80 competitors.
Sarah Lancaster, representing Chapman: Lancaster helped lead her team to victory against Greer Middle College with impressive stats: 17 kills, 10 digs, and three service aces.
Mallory Mizell, of Woodmont: Mizell bolstered her team’s efforts against J.L. Mann and T.L. Hanna, recording 24 kills and 20 digs in their pair of victories.
Barrett Owens, from Easley: Owens shot a 39 to win medalist honors and led her team to a three-shot victory against Greenville.
Ashby Williams, representing Daniel: Williams outpaced her competition during a home cross country meet, clocking a winning time of 19:41.05.

All Eyes on the Prize

The competition is fierce, and every vote counts. Let’s applaud all the athletes for their exceptional contributions. Remember: it’s not just about the victory but the journey, the hard work, and the teamwork. Each of these young, talented girls exemplified this spirit in their winning performances.
