In the early hours of Monday morning, two young individuals, a teenager and a pre-teen, had stolen a car which resulted in a high-speed chase ending in a fiery crash in the Spartanburg County area. Both juveniles were promptly hospitalized following the incident.
Law enforcement in the area were quick to respond once alerted about the stolen vehicle. The young suspects had a shot at stopping when the car was first spotted by the deputies. However, the young duo reportedly refused to follow orders and a speedy chase began.
The chase culminated in a dramatic crash, with the stolen vehicle overturning at the intersection of Walnut Hill Road and Walnut Hill Church Road. As if that wasn’t enough, things took a heated turn when the damaged car caught on fire. Thankfully, officials were able to swiftly rescue the juveniles from the vehicle and take them to a hospital. The parents were notified about their children’s situation, bringing them up to speed on the eventful morning their kids had.
Gabriella Parham, the owner of the stolen car, shared a detailed account of the incident. She explained how her faithful dog, Bella, raised the alarm early enough for her to catch a glimpse of the young criminals before they fled. “All I saw was a phone flashlight and I screamed ‘get out of the car!’, but they just sped off,” Parham reported. She revealed that they had been speeding as fast as 145 miles per hour.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was surprisingly revealed that a TikTok trend could be responsible for the car theft. The trend involves breaking into specific, older models of cars, such as Kia Souls, using a USB cord. The crime might seem technologically ingenious, but it could lead to dangerous outcomes as seen in this case.
This event has given the residents a rather rude awakening. James Parham, a local resident, and Gabriella’s husband voiced his concern about the safety in their neighborhood. “The safety is the appeal to wanting to come and live here, so to see this type of behavior escalate, this is an entire invasion, and it’s just a stair step into breaking into homes,” James said. It’s clear that crime creeping into their peaceful lives has left the residents shaken, but they stand resilient against the prospect of it becoming a trend.
The investigation remains underway. The charges against these young individuals are yet to be revealed, but it’s clear that their reckless act could have resulted in much worse.
