Spartanburg Says Farewell to Favorite Ice Cream Shop, Hub City Scoops
In a bittersweet farewell, residents of Spartanburg bid adieu to a beloved locale, Hub City Scoops on November 23. Known for its diverse range of delectable flavors, this cherished ice cream shop has been an integral part of the city’s downtown area since its inception in 2016.
Owners Bitter-Sweet Departure
Owner Kathy Silverman, recalls a challenging year, from the ravages of Hurricane Helene that caused a massive power outage and loss of inventory, to the escalating demands of expansion in personal life. Faced with these myriad factors, Silverman announced the decision to pivot towards personal life, surrendering her passion project to the winds of change.
A Taste of The Past
Opening its doors in 2016, the ice cream shop started as a small venture at 147 E. Main St. It quickly turned into a local favorite and eventually had to shift its place to a larger location on 158 E. Main St. in 2020, where it dished up more than 28 flavors of premium ice cream. Locals will surely miss the unique flavors, which included the likes of This Just Got Serious – a smooth mix of salted caramel ice cream, sea salt fudge and salted cashews.
Community Backlash
News of the closure sent waves of surprise across loyal customers. Cathryn Smith, a local who often frequented the shop, expressed her shock, passionate about the businessโs closure after nearly a decade of service. Customers recall fond memories of midday work breaks dedicated to a short trip to the beloved ice cream shop, leisurely strolls with a cone in hand, and birthday parties celebrated within its vibrant walls.
Looking Towards the Future
Despite the loss of the much-loved ice cream shop, Silvermanโs decision to shift focus to personal life engendered a hopeful perspective among the community members. Smith remains optimistic for the local businesses within the city, cherishing the last memories she had of Hub City Scoops.
