A Spartanburg County Family’s Home Ransacked After Hurricane Helene Evacuation

Here in Duncan, South Carolina, a family finds themselves victims to not just one, but two unfortunate circumstances that left them grappling with loss and violation of privacy. They’d evacuated their new home due to Hurricane Helene, only to return and discover their residence had been broken into, and possessions worth over $7,000 pilfered.

The Unlucky Events

After being hit by Hurricane Helene, the homeowners left their new house in Spartanburg County off Buckingham Road, due to a tree having fallen on it. They sought shelter with family members, hoping the situation would improve soon. A few days after their evacuation, however, the homeowner received an alarming call from a concerned neighbor who’d noticed their front door open and took the initiative to close it.

Upon their return, the residents experienced a new shock. The back door of their home was found wide open. Burglars, it appeared, had rummaged through their home – drawers were found rifled through and cabinets left ajar. Not only this, but all of the wife’s clothes were missing, a comforter gone, and even a PlayStation 4 was nowhere to be found.

The Realization

The worst was yet to come. As they proceeded to investigate their violated home, they realized that their wedding gifts, previously placed on their kitchen counter, had been swiped as well. Two trailers parked in front of their house, which they had ensured were locked and secure, showed signs of forced entry and were found broken into.

After a careful estimation of their losses, they discovered that a total of $7,400 worth of items had been stolen from both their home, and the two trailers parked outside their residence. In a time of already escalated stress due to natural disasters, this incident immensely amplified their hardship.

An Ongoing Investigation

They reported this unfortunate incident to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived at the scene promptly. The burglary incident is under thorough investigation as they look for potential leads and suspects who took advantage of the family’s absence during Hurricane Helene.

Moreover, this incident serves as a stark reminder to remain vigilant during times of distress. Precautions must be taken to secure homes adequately before evacuating them due to natural disasters. One can never be too prepared for incidents like these.
