I-26 Westbound Lanes Set for Overnight Closure Due to Bridge Repairs in Spartanburg County
Spartanburg County to Experience Traffic Diversions
The westbound lanes of Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County will undergo overnight closure due to necessary bridge repairs, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). These repairs, due to take place on the Fairforest Road bridge, will cause significant traffic diversions.
Impact on Normal Traffic Flow: Detours and Deadlines
The closure time is scheduled from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning. During this six-hour period, traffic on the westbound lanes of I-26 will be detoured. The detour begins precisely before midnight with traffic being rerouted onto U.S. 29 at Exit 21. Vehicles will then proceed to Interstates 85 and Business 85 before returning to I-26.
SCDOT plans to reopen one lane by approximately 6 a.m. On Friday, August 2, one lane will be temporarily closed from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following day. Similar closures will occur from 9 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, and again from 9 p.m. Sunday till 6 a.m. Monday.
Root Cause: A Road Incident Turned Construction Problem
These closures come in the wake of a crash involving construction equipment on a tractor trailer, which struck the Fairforest Road bridge on July 1. Due to significant damage, the bridge has been closed for repairs since the incident. Once the damaged portion is removed, work will commence on a new bridge deck, beams, and railings.
What to Expect for Motorists
Motorists should brace for routine overnight lane closures on the I-26 to accommodate these repairs. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys with these disruptions in mind, hoping to minimize delays and safety risks. While the repair work may cause short-term inconvenience, it’s integral to maintain long-term highway safety and efficiency on this busy section of I-26.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is urging all motorists on westbound I-26 to observe all posted signs, be watchful of personnel, and operate their vehicles with caution during these closures.
