On a sun-drenched Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina, University campus – home of the Terriers – witnessed an exhilarating college football game. The Buccaneers of East Tennessee State swept to a remarkable 24-7 victory over the home side, Wofford.
Heart and soul of this significant win was Jaylen King, who emerged as a one-person wrecking crew for the Buccaneers. King wore down the defense, rushing for 88 yards and scoring two pivotal touchdowns in the second half, transforming what had been a tense and tight contest into a decisive victory for East Tennessee State.
In the third quarter, King capped a solid 9-play, 74-yard drive with a dynamic 22-yard run, giving East Tennessee State a comforting 10-point cushion with a 17-7 lead. Scenting victory, King charged 31 yards on the very next possession, again crossing the line for a touchdown. The Buccaneers found their groove and there was no coming back for the Terriers.
The first half, however, was a completely different story. Though the Buccaneers led 3-0, King’s performance was shaky, throwing a pair of interceptions, the Buccaneers’ defense, nonetheless, came to the rescue. They throttled the Terriers to a mere 40 yards and just one first down in the initial half.
The Buccaneers were not just about Jaylen King. Their special teams rose to the occasion in the second half, playing a major role in turning the tide. Elijah Taylor executed a noteworthy 15-yard scoop-and-score, reacting quickly to a mistake by Wofford’s punter who failed to control a high snap. Teddy Wilson further turned the screws, stripping the poor punter of the ball. This ’one-two’ blow knocked the wind out of the Terriers.
The home team tried to mount a comeback, responding with a 75-yard drive that culminated in Bryce Corriston finding Jordan Davis for a 29-yard touchdown. But the momentum had already swung decisively in the Buccaneers’ direction and they clinched the win effortlessly.
King, with his kicks passing for 198 yards in addition to his 88 rushing yards, ended the game as the leading yard miner. When the dust settled, East Tennessee State had amassed a total of 407 yards to Wofford’s 178, illustrating the dominance the Buccaneers showcased during the game.
All in all, it was a day to savor for East Tennessee State and their fans, with their team scoring a clear victory, while for Wofford, it was back to the drawing board.
