Vance served a four-year enlistment in the public affairs section of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, a role that barely saw any combat. Despite this, he has been a vocal critic of Governor Walz, who had a 24 year-long career with the Army National Guard. Vance cast Walz in a negative light, suggesting he opted out of duty before his unit got deployed to Iraq, an accusation that Keilar found problematic.

Keilar, who is married to an active-duty Green Beret, argued that Vance’s representation of his own military service gives a false impression.
