Juneteenth: What’s Open and What’s Closed in Anderson, Spartanburg, and Greenville?

On Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in 1865, several federal entities and businesses adjust their operation schedule. In 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the 250,000 enslaved people across the state that they were now free. In 2021, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth an official federal holiday. Though it is not recognized as a state holiday in South Carolina, it’s a time for communities to come together to remember the history of slavery in the United States and celebrate the progress made.

Open Businesses

Restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores will remain open and operate during regular business hours. Businesses such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Food Lion, Aldi, Kroger, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Starbucks have confirmed their operation on their respective websites.

Non-Federal Closures on Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, resulting in most nonessential federal government employees being off from work. Thus, banks including Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase will remain closed as per the information provided on their respective websites.

No Mail on Juneteenth

Also, there won’t be any mail delivery on Juneteenth, as the United States Postal Service will not be in operation.

Trash Pickup Norms

On the brighter side, The City of Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson will continue with their normal trash pickup schedules.

Courthouse Working Hours

If you have legal business to attend to, you will be glad to know that Anderson, Spartanburg, and Greenville county courthouse locations will remain open.

If you have any packages to ship or pickup, UPS and FedEx stores nationwide will remain open and offer their usual services according to their official schedules.

For book lovers and researchers, Anderson, Greenville, and Spartanburg county libraries will remain open on Juneteenth.

On the medical front, companies like CVS, Walgreens, and urgent care centers will continue to provide their regular services including prescription refills and urgent care.
