Sponsor Our ArticlesFort Worth, Texas – It’s a tough time for the Granger family as they navigate the medical challenges faced by veteran congresswoman Kay Granger. Known for her long-standing service in the House of Representatives, Granger has recently been in the spotlight—though not for the usual legislative achievements. Instead, her declining health after moving into a retirement community has raised concerns among her constituents and colleagues alike.
According to her son, Brandon Granger, the congresswoman’s health has taken a “very rapid” downturn since her relocation to a retirement facility. Granger, 81, made the decision to move on her own but has unfortunately shown signs of dementia over the past few months. Initially, her absence from congressional duties went largely unnoticed, but it has now come to light that she hasn’t cast a vote since July 24, missing over half of the votes this year.
Brandon expressed his frustration with reports suggesting his mother is in a memory care unit, insisting she lives in an independent living area. He told one publication, “They have a memory care facility there, but she’s in [an] independent living facility. It’s a nice condo. I helped her move in.” This pushback reflects the family’s desire to set the record straight amidst the swirling rumors.
Over the weekend, news regarding Granger’s condition began to spread, catching the attention of constituents and media alike. One resident of her district claimed Granger was residing in memory care, prompting a flood of questions regarding the future of her congressional duties. Brandon has been candid about how challenging this situation has been for their family, stating, “her decline has been very rapid and very difficult.”
In light of these developments, Kay Granger released her own statement, acknowledging the difficulties she’s faced. She expressed her gratitude for the support from family, friends, and constituents, saying, “I have been navigating some unforeseen health challenges over the past year… my health challenges have progressed, making frequent travel to Washington both difficult and unpredictable.” This resonates deeply with those who have supported her decades-long career in public service.
Granger’s legacy is notable; since her election to Congress in 1997, she has made significant strides for her constituents and even broke ground as the first female mayor of Fort Worth. Many were heartened to see her make a brief appearance in November for the unveiling of her portrait as the Appropriations Committee Chairwoman, a testament to her numerous contributions.
However, she has not been present for any votes since her portrait unveiling, adding to growing concerns surrounding her ability to continue serving effectively.
As \(Kay Granger\) prepares to step down at the end of her congressional term, attention shifts to her successor, Craig Goldman, who is set to take over in January. The Congresswoman has consistently received praise for her dedication and tireless work ethic, with both Republican and Democrat colleagues expressing their admiration.
As Fort Worth and the broader political community come to terms with the potential shift, it’s clear that Granger’s long-standing service will not be easily forgotten. With her health challenges, she reminds us that public service is not just about politics—it’s also about being human.
