In a powerful initiative, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Upstate orchestrated an outstanding back-to-school event on Tuesday. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Shipwreck Cove in Duncan, this event, teeming with revelry and altruistic spirits, witnessed the joining of local youths (Littles) and their volunteer mentors (Bigs). Aimed at ensuring a smooth transition into the upcoming school year, the lively event had generous offerings of free school supplies, food, and endless fun in the water.
Events like these stoke the glow of goodwill and community spirit. Ten-year-old McKenzie, who partnered with her Big, Debbie Winkler, after waiting several months for the perfect match, enthusiastically shared, “She always wants to know how school is going!”. Winkler mirrored the sentiment, describing her Little as a “bright shining light” who loves being around people and enjoys the simple things in life as she does.
Winkler, along with approximately 100 other local mentors, teamed up with BBBS Upstate to make a difference in these children’s lives. Big Brother Chris Sorrell reflected on his experience, stating, “The way we impact them by teaching them things and just being there is incredible. In fact, I’ve become a better listener thanks to my Little. There is a profound depth in engaging and genuinely listening to what children have to say.”
The BBBS Upstate used the occasion to encourage more individuals to join their mentorship program. Emphasizing the rewarding experience, Sorrell motivated others, saying, “Get off the bench and come out to play. It’s worth the time you invest.” This call to action aims to connect more Little Brothers with Bigs, strengthening the fabric of the local community.
The event saw generous support from local businesses including Bruster’s Ice Cream, Craft Axe Throwing, Foster Victor Financial Wealth, Milo’s Tea, PepsiCo., Shipwreck Cove, and Target. These contributions tremendously boosted the day’s success, proving that a united community can transform the world, one step at a time.
BBBS Upstate continues to create events promoting local youth’s welfare and is always looking for more Bigs to join their ranks. For those interested in becoming a mentor or learning more about BBBS Upstate can visit their official website.
