On a cloudy Saturday, officers painted a rather grim picture in Spartanburg County, S.C., as they reported the arrest of a man involved in criminal sexual misconduct. This may sound like just another incident, but the alleged offender isn’t a stranger to such charges.
According to deputies, the suspect held in custody is identified as 62-year-old Ian Mitchell Farnsworth. And, it’s not his first time in front of the law. Way back in 1992, Farnsworth had found himself on the wrong side of the law, charged with attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11.
Fast forward to today, the Spartanburg Co. Special Victims Unit, together with their counterparts at the Cleveland Co. Sheriff’s Office (NC), has managed to issue two felony warrants to Farnsworth for indecent liberties with a minor. These charges are largely based on Farnsworth’s history of sexual misconduct, which the authorities have kept in their records.
During their recent arrest and subsequent investigation, they were able to uncover even more hideous acts committed by Farnsworth in Spartanburg County. On September 25, he was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the first degree.
As the investigation continues, the minor victim recently revealed at the Children’s Advocacy Center that the sexual abuse by Farnsworth has been an ongoing predicament within the past year. This revelation prompted additional charges against our suspect.
On November 7, Farnsworth was then slapped with additional charges, including criminal sexual conduct with a minor (second degree) and two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the third degree.
Currently, Farnsworth is safely secured behind bars at the Spartanburg County Detention Center, with no possibility of bond. While this may bring relief to some, it’s a stern reminder that justice does catch up, and it’s never too late to hold the guilty accountable for their actions.
As this story continues to unfold, the authorities are steadfast in their quest for justice. They’re appealing to you or anyone else who might have been a victim or knows a victim of a sexual offense related to this case.
If anyone holds a shard of information that could help in this case, they are urged to contact Investigator Sarah Arms at sarms@spartanburgcounty.org or by calling (864) 503-4534.
The community of Spartanburg County, S.C. is counting on your commitment to ensure justice for these young victims. While this is a daunting revelation, it’s also a reminder to everyone to stay vigilant, informed, and prepared to support justice efforts in every possible way.
