As we wave goodbye to April and welcome May, we have a wide array of events spanning fun activities for the family across Upstate South Carolina like never before. With more than 120 activities on offer, the month promises to be abundantly filled with adventures for every age and taste. From cultural exhibits to local markets, science workshops to interactive stage performances, and much more, the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg are poised to deliver a diverse calendar of events that are sure to keep residents and tourists equally engaged.
As part of these festivities, we kick off May with the Family Connection’s LOOK!™ Photography Exhibit running through to June 14 at TCMU-Greenville. A visual treat for photography enthusiasts, the exhibit showcases stunning pieces that highlight the magical interplay of light, subject and creativity. Meanwhile, families can create their own fun with hands-on activities thanks to events like the Afternoon Explorations at Roper Mountain Science Center, Teen Recharge: Furry Friend Edition and Little Sprouts’ Day Out at the Spartanburg Main Library.
For those who love the stage, popular Disney classic “The Little Mermaid” will be brought to life by the Mauldin Theater Company at the Mauldin Cultural Center throughout the month. In addition, the Greenville Theatre is set to enchant audiences with ‘the Great Fairy Tale Race Story Time Takeover.’
Charitable events such as Twilight in the Garden, a fundraiser benefiting Hatcher Garden, and Tails and Trails 5K Walk/Run benefitting Greenville County Animal Care, offer citizens an opportune way to contribute back to the community while enjoying a delightful evening or a healthful morning run.
In line with promoting learning and creativity among the young minds, Spartanburg Science Center extends an enjoyable educational experience for students with their event ‘May the Fourth Be with You.’ Here, kids can decipher the science behind Star Wars while having a light saber-wielding good time! Icing on the cake, interactive workshops like the Zoo Tots: Animal Babies, Galactic Goo – Space Slime Workshop with Challenge Island Greenville, and the Wonder Club offer immersive learning opportunities for children in a fun manner.
Not to be outdone by the weekdays, the weekends of May are packed with events including Amp’d Up Fridays presented by the Mauldin Cultural Center, and the Mezcal’s 4th Annual Fiesta Festival. On May the Fourth, immerse yourself with fellow Star Wars enthusiasts in a day of intergalactic fun! Attend the Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and let music from a galaxy far away wash over you.
Rounding off the month on a high note, the Greenville Downtown Airport will host its 11th Annual Take Flight 5K and 1-mile race, offering a thrilling event for athletic enthusiasts of all ages. The Greenville Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, celebrating Hellenic culture with sumptuous food, traditional dance and music, is another highlight that cannot be missed!
With an extensive line-up of events woven into the fabric of Greenville and Spartanburg, this May holds the promise of being a vibrant, engaging month that showcases the richness of our community, our commitment to family fun, and our persistent passion for creating inclusive, exciting environments for people of all ages.
