On a cool South Carolina evening, the small but tight-knit community of Spartanburg County was rocked by a tragic roadway incident. This Saturday night, a routine drive took a devastating turn, ending in the loss of a prominent local, their life cut short in a terrible motorcycle collision.
The scene unfolded on SC Highway 9, a familiar path for those commuting through this friendly county. A 2011 Honda SUV, with three occupants onboard, was heading north when the driver went to make a routine left turn onto Midland Drive around 8:30 p.m.
Just as the Honda was completing the turn, it collided with a 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was travelling south on the same road. The subsequent crash resulting from this unfortunate timing proved to be fatal. Thankfully, it was reported that everyone inside the SUV was unhurt. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist wasn’t as lucky.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, has now confirmed that the motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
The tragic loss felt by this incident is nothing short of heartbreaking, as it was revealed that the victim was none other than 51-year-old Edwin Chad Medford. Known for his infectious laughter and jovial nature, Chad was a well-loved member of the community in Boiling Springs. His loss has left a frigid wave of grief washing over the tight-knit community, reminding everyone of the fragility of life.
It is in these times that coming together and supporting one another shows the true strength of a community. Everybody here knows everybody, and by extension, the impact can be felt by all. Loved ones of Medford have been inundated with thoughtful messages and gestures of support, standing testament to the community’s will to persevere despite the pain.
The investigation of this heartbreaking incident is currently underway. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) have been tirelessly working to uncover the circumstances that led up to the tragic collision. Every detail is being meticulously combed through, leaving no stone unturned in their quest for answers.
As we forge ahead, we hold onto the hope that this tragic event will serve to increase awareness about road safety and the importance of watching out for each other. No matter how routine, or everyday an activity driving may seem, life is unpredictable, and it serves as a reminder that every journey, no matter how short, needs to be undertaken with full attention and caution.
Our thoughts tonight are with Edwin Chad Medford, his loved ones, and the entire Boiling Springs community. It’s never easy to make sense of such tragedy, but it’s the strength in unity that will help the community recover and heal, while remembering the full life lived by their much-loved friend and neighbour.
