Tragic Murder-Suicide Rocks North Charleston Community

North Charleston, South Carolina – A devastating incident unfolded on December 27, 2024, when a local man took the lives of three family members before ending his own life in a tragic turn of events at the Abberly Crossing Apartment Complex in Ladson. This heartbreaking situation left the community in shock and disbelief.

The Incident

It was around 4:41 p.m. when authorities were alerted to a shooting at the apartment complex. The 44-year-old suspect, identified as Darius Seay, allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife, Adrienne Seay, aged 38, along with her father, John F. Childs, who was 68, and her brother, John A. Childs, who was 36 years old. The scene was particularly chilling as witnesses reported seeing Seay armed with an AR-15-style rifle and wearing protective armor.

After the horrific act, Seay fled the scene with the couple’s 5-year-old child, who fortunately was unharmed in the chaos. Witnesses played a crucial role as they provided descriptions of his vehicle to the authorities, helping them quickly identify and locate the suspect.

A Desperate Situation

Police Chief Ron Camacho explained that this tragic event stemmed from a domestic violence situation, noting that Darius and Adrienne were in the midst of a divorce. Just a day prior to the incident, Seay had been arrested on charges of second-degree assault and battery and had been released on a $10,000 bond. This fact raises many questions about the circumstances leading to such a shocking outcome.

Final Moments

As police tracked Seay to his home on Briarstone Court, they encountered him exiting with the child in his arms. The tense situation escalated rapidly when Seay, after a brief interaction with officers, tragically took his own life by shooting himself in front of them. He was pronounced dead at 5:09 p.m., just minutes after taking the lives of his estranged family members inside the apartment.

A Community in Mourning

Following the incident, the community was left grappling with the loss. The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims on December 28, 2024. Relatives of Adrienne and her family were reminded of their loved ones and the need to protect the 5-year-old child who survived this tragedy. Community members have been rallying to provide support and comfort to those affected.

Seeking Solutions

The North Charleston Police Department is actively continuing its investigation into this devastating case. They have reassured the public that this incident appears to be isolated and does not pose an ongoing threat to the community. Furthermore, in light of such a tragic occurrence, authorities have encouraged anyone struggling with mental health issues or emotional distress to reach out for help.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available for those in need, providing essential support during challenging times. This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for mental health awareness and intervention. As the community begins to heal, many are focusing on ensuring the well-being of the innocent child caught in the crossfire of such a heartbreaking situation.
