In a significant academic appointment, Don Bent, the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Oshkosh Defense, has been hired as the executive in residence and distinguished professor of practice for industry partnerships and engineering programs at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
Oshkosh Defense is known for its expertise in producing heavy-duty vehicles. The company is currently in the process of establishing a manufacturing site in Spartanburg County aimed at manufacturing the next generation of mail delivery vehicles for the United States Postal Service.
At USC Upstate, Bent’s key responsibilities will include supporting the development of a new undergraduate engineering program and nurturing strategic partnerships with regional manufacturers. This will prove to be significant for the university to meet the growing need for skilled professionals in the region.
Speaking of this defining appointment, USC Upstate Chancellor Bennie L. Harris praised Bent’s extensive experience in engineering and manufacturing, strong leadership skills, and deep knowledge of the Upstate manufacturing ecosystem. According to him, Bent is the ideal choice for the university to launch a program that will contribute immensely to the region.
Harris also appreciated Bent’s known reputation as a caring mentor dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders. His expertise and guidance are expected to enable USC Upstate to develop a talent pipeline to fill the growing needs of over 2,000 engineering and manufacturing companies located in the Upstate.
Bent will also be advising the faculty of the George Dean Johnson College of Business and Economics and the College of Science and Technology. His key role here will be to ensure the creation of courses that meet the present industry needs and standards. Moreover, he will engage with business leaders to create internships and apprenticeships that will assist the university students in transitioning smoothly from their college to their careers. He expressed his excitement to support the bright future of the university and foster win-win connections with the industry.
Before his academic turn, Bent served as COO at Oshkosh Defense where he was instrumental in ensuring the successful execution of numerous programs and attracting new businesses. In addition, he also overlooked procurement, manufacturing, and quality/continuous improvement. Prior to this, he held the position of Vice President of Operations for Oshkosh Defense and Oshkosh Finishing Services. Bent embarked on his journey with Oshkosh Defense in 2010. His tenure there included leading the production increase for the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) and managing the international production launch of the MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle.
Before joining Oshkosh Corp., Bent spent his career leading lean manufacturing transformations at renowned companies including General Motors, BorgWarner, and Amcor Packaging. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Master of Science in manufacturing management, both from Kettering University.
