Pacolet, S.C. Secures $1.2 Million for Road Repaving Through Sales Tax and Grants

Pacolet, S.C. to Repave Roads Thanks to Tax Revenue and Grants

Good news for drivers in Pacolet, South Carolina! The local government has unveiled plans to repave many of the town’s roads thanks to anticipated revenue from a county sales tax and grants from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). This massive undertaking slated for 2028 is made possible due to more than a cool million bucks expected to be directed towards the little town.

The secret to this windfall lies in the one cent sales tax approved by voters in Spartanburg County last fall, which is estimated to accumulate just shy of half a billion dollars by 2030. The collected funds are set to be divided among each municipality in the county according to the percentage of road mileage within their boundaries. Lucky for Pacolet, it’s third on the list to receive the highest amounts from this tax revenue allocation system.

Yep, you heard that right. Pacolet, the tiny town with a big heart, is third in line, right behind Spartanburg and Greer. While those two places have larger slices of the pie with roughly $7.3 million and $1 million, respectively, Pacolet is no slouch with its anticipated $600,000.”

While most folks might not be aware of whether their roads are technically city, county, or state-owned, let’s be real- what they care the most about is having those potholes filled and smoother rides. With this funding, much-needed road repairs can finally be done, especially in smaller municipalities, like Pacolet, that historically have had fewer resources to tackle such projects.

Using these funds wisely

The plan is to pair this windfall with additional funding from the SCDOT, bringing the total to be used on road improvements to a whopping $1.2 million. As Patrick Kay, Pacolet Town Administrator, shared, taking on such a wide-scale project will require loads of work. However, the end results would be well worth it, with the town boasting a network of newly spruced up roads.

The way that the funding process works is that each municipality must submit a project proposal by the end of the year before their slated access to the penny tax funds. And while this might seem a fair way off, the administrators encourage anyone in the Pacolet community with some thoughts on which roads need attention to reach out to their local Town Hall or council members. Remember, your voice counts, and you could play a part in making local roadways that much safer and more enjoyable for everyone to drive on.

With its roads looking forward to a major makeover in the not-so-distant future, the future for Pacolet appears brighter and smoother – quite literally. Here’s looking forward to 2028!
