Peter Moore has been recognized as the Governor’s Legacy Volunteer of the Year during the Together SC Nonprofit Summit. His dedication to Spartanburg Regional Hospice has spanned over a decade, where he has provided musical comfort and essential support to families in need. Moore’s volunteer efforts, including fundraising and delivering meals, showcase the profound impact he has on the community and the lives he touches through his service.

Peter Moore Recognized as Volunteer of the Year for Unwavering Service

In the heart of Spartanburg, one dedicated volunteer has recently been awarded the title of Governor’s Legacy Volunteer of the Year. This prestigious recognition took place during the annual Together SC Nonprofit Summit in Columbia, highlighting the incredible work of individuals who have devoted over a decade of their lives to a single cause. That individual is none other than Peter Moore, a devoted supporter of Spartanburg Regional Hospice and a key player in the Hospice Division of the Spartanburg Regional Foundation.

A Decade of Dedication

Peter Moore’s journey as a volunteer began long before the Hospice Home even opened its doors. His commitment to serving hospice patients and their families has spanned many years, enfolding him in a community that recognizes the importance of compassion and support during difficult times. Moore has dedicated countless hours to playing the violin for hospice bereavement services, offering a melodic comfort to grieving families.

During Thanksgiving, he shifts gears to provide warmth and nourishment by delivering meals to both patients and their families, ensuring no one has to face the holiday alone. His solid efforts don’t stop there. He actively participates in raising funds for the Hospice Special Needs Fund, which helps alleviate financial burdens for patients and their loved ones.

Music: A Universal Language

Being a musician, Moore intimately understands the profound emotional impact that music can carry, especially in hospice care. His experiences playing hymns for patients—some of whom may be unconscious—have underscored the magical connection music can create even in the most challenging moments. He has witnessed how the simple strumming of strings can evoke feelings and responses that go beyond words, providing a sense of peace and comfort for both patients and their families, particularly during holidays.

Building a Home for Compassion

Moore was part of the original team that successfully raised funds to construct the Hospice Home. He even visited hospice facilities across different states, eagerly seeking insights and ideas to develop a space that embodies exceptional care. His foresight led to the installation of an advanced HVAC system that effectively eliminates medical odors, making the environment more inviting and homelike, a significant factor in enhancing the quality of life for patients receiving end-of-life care.

A Life Rich in Experience

Peter Moore isn’t just a musician and volunteer; he has a deeply rooted background as a psychologist. Having worked for twenty-five years with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, he devoted much of his professional life to helping those in need across Spartanburg, Union, and Cherokee counties. With a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wofford College and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his volunteer efforts.

Moore’s life path has not been without its ups and downs. He served in the Vietnam War and spent time in the South Carolina National Guard, experiences that have shaped his compassionate outlook. Tragically, the early loss of his wife inspired him to immerse himself in volunteer work, proving to be a valuable source of social connection and personal fulfillment.

Giving Back to Families

The work that Moore does extends far beyond music; he plays a pivotal role in the Hospice Special Needs Fund. He recalls a touching story involving a patient who wished to provide a swing set for his granddaughter. After the patient’s passing, this fund steps in to make that final wish come true, showcasing the profound impact that Moore’s efforts have on real lives within the community.

Finding Joy in Service

Ultimately, Peter Moore’s unwavering commitment to service and the people in his community significantly enhances not only his life but also the lives of countless families navigating challenging times. His inspiring journey exemplifies the heart of volunteerism, reminding us all of the power of compassion and connection in the world of hospice care.
