SPARTANBURG COUNTY — Mountain View Preparatory School in Spartanburg has kicked off a lawsuit against several Spartanburg school districts, including Spartanburg One, responsible for Landrum, Campobello, and Inman. The bone of contention is purportedly the blockage of the prep school’s seventh and eighth graders from participating in athletics. The school has also included the Foothills Athletic Conference in its legal action.
Mountain View’s principal, Mark Talley, has expressed his dissatisfaction over the unanimous decision by the school districts not to permit Mountain View Preparatory School into the conference, even after an appeal. This, he reported, has resulted in dozens of students leaving the school and parental frustration over the forced choice between an academically fitting school with limited sports opportunities or a school with excellent athletics that may not fit their child’s educational needs.
Mountain View Preparatory School, while providing a career and technical education pathway, does offer a curriculum focus on career paths related to sports and sports entertainment. According to Principal Talley, “We are a public charter school with a sports-focused curriculum. I believe the perception of our school and what we indeed are is slightly divergent.”
Projected losses due to this decision are predicted to exceed $600,000 over the next six years for Mountain View Preparatory School, as middle school-aged students have been disallowed from participating in athletic programs. Nonetheless, the flag-bearers at Mountain View Preparatory School have communicated their unwavering resolution to ensure their students’ success, both academically and athletically.
Mountain View Preparatory School is conveniently located at 895 Springfield Rd. in Spartanburg.
