What do you get when you mix beer, burgers and a presidential debate? If you were in Spartanburg on September 10, 2024, you’d have found out exactly what that unique cocktail tasted like!
At FR8yard, a popular local watering hole, folks of all beliefs and backgrounds gathered round to watch the year’s first presidential debate on a jumbo screen. And who were the star players of the night? None other than Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Yes, politics and brewskies shared the spotlight that night, marking the beginning of what could be an intense election season.
The mastermind behind this event was Kenneth Cribb, a founding partner of the restaurant group owning FR8yard. He decided it would be interesting to bring people together to watch the debate in a social, laid-back setting. Despite online comments raising eyebrows at the amalgamation of politics and ale, it was evident that most were looking forward to an evening of mutual respect and hearty conversation. And, of course, the alcoholic beverages on demand were a soothing comforter.
The night of the debate saw a full house at FR8yard, with patrons huddled in groups enjoying their refreshing drinks and munchies while keeping an attentive eye on the screen. The night began with a general consensus: most had already made up their minds about their choice for President long before the candidates took the stage. Despite this, the crowd maintained a hopeful curiosity about the potential surprises the night could bring.
This gathering was not just about watching a debate; it was a superb showcase of diverse opinions and perspectives. For Lilly Simmons, a leather-jacket clad woman sitting among friends, the game was pretty much over even before it started. She had made up her mind to back Kamala Harris, although she was intrigued at the idea of having a drink with Trump, to get a taste of his eccentricity.
Shreyas Bhayana, a bespectacled man in a dark T-shirt, decided to approach the evening with an open mind. By the end, he found himself gravitating towards Trump thanks for his direct approach to issues.
Meanwhile, Chris Ward, who was there at his wife’s behest, wasn’t blown away by either Harris or Trump. “It’s a story about who can lie the best,” he bluntly confessed. On the flip side, Julie Ludovici, who had backed Harris before the debate, praised the Vice President for her objectivity and dedication throughout the night.
Apart from this spectacle, the city prepares itself for the upcoming November elections. This is not just about who gets to sit in the Oval Office for the next four years. Down the ballot list, local decisions about fire commissions and more are awaiting the voters’ verdict.
As this political season gears up, Spartangburg residents remain invested in the democratic process, whether it’s at a political rally, at a city council meeting, or over a beer at their local pub. This debate night was just a snapshot of what’s to come in the weeks leading up to the elections.
